The Baltimore City Planning Department is seeking a part-time (average of 30 hours a week), temporary consultant to function as the Baltimore City Food Policy Coordinator. The duration of the position is subject to available funding. This position will work with the Department of Planning, Office of Sustainability and the Baltimore City Health Department on crosscutting issues related to increasing access to healthy foods citywide. Fertile Fields Farm seeks Interns

Fertile Fields Farm is a diversified organic farm located in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, near the Connecticut River.   We farm 2 ½ acres of level, well-drained riverbed soil. We are certified  organic since 2005 and market our produce at the Brattleboro Farmer’s Market and through a 35 family CSA.  We have four greenhouses, a pond, three beehives, and grow over 50 varieties of vegetables, herbs, flowers and berries.

We seek interns who love working outdoors, being physically active and learning about being a beginning farmer.  Experience is not necessary. A sense of humor is a plus. Special projects for 2010 include new greenhouse completion, building a walk-in cooler (both spring projects) and building on our first year of incorporating nutrient dense crop practices. (more…)

Equinox Community Farm, a small farm located approximately ten miles from downtown Madison in Waunakee is seeking one capable worker for the 2010 season.  The applicant will be involved in all aspects of the farm which include vegetable, herb, and fruit production and marketing for a Community Supported Agriculture program and farmer’s market, raising grass-fed beef under management intensive grazing, and maple syrup production.  The applicant will be the farm’s only employee and thus will work closely with the farmer and will have a great opportunity to experience and learn about all aspects of the farming process. The Kalamazoo Nature Center (Michigan) has a wonderful opportunity for the right person. We are seeking a motivated individual to be our Farm Manager. This person will be responsible for developing an educational, sustainable, working farm. This is part of the Nature Center’s plan to promote the importance of sustainable local healthy foods. A short job description is below.

The DeLano Farms Manager position is a regular, full-time position with responsibilities including, but not limited to, overall management of the DeLano Farms with emphasis on the development of a Community Supported Agricultural (CSA) model.  Responsibilities include crop production, planning and management, care of animals, staff supervision, budget management, planning, marketing, procurement, and shareholder relations.  This position will work with KNC educators in providing opportunities for the public to experience and learn about sustainable agriculture.  The DeLano Farms Manager reports to the Vice President of Education of the Kalamazoo Nature Center and works closely with the all KNC staff.  The position is full-time year round with a seasonally variable work schedule and will be required to be on-call with the farm at all times. 1. Food literacy – knowing what healthy food is and why healthy eating choices are important
2. Food competency – knowing how to grow, prepare and store delicious and nutritious food
3. Food Justice and Food Security – having enough healthful food available for all

RAFI-USA seeks a Program Director

RAFI-USA seeks a special person to serve as Program Director of our Tobacco Communities Reinvestment Fund (TCRF). The program assists farmers in developing new sources of agricultural income through provision of cost-share grants.  TCRF is funded with a multi-year grant from the NC Tobacco Trust Fund Commission.  Primary duties include project oversight, program development and staff management.  The Program Director will be responsible for ensuring continued successful implementation of the widely acclaimed program and for charting its future course. Drumlin Farm seeks Five Crop Apprentices

Drumlin Farm is a Massachusetts Audubon wildlife sanctuary and educational farm with a mixed vegetable and livestock operation. Each season we offer six Crops Apprenticeships that begin between April and June, and run through the end of October. What distinguishes our apprentice program from that of other farms is the exposure we offer to a wide variety of marketing techniques. We attend farmers markets every week, stock a farmstand each day, operate summer and winter CSAs, and make and market our own pesto. Apprentices participate in all methods of selling the food they help grow. In the field, apprentices work closely with the Crops Manager and learn how to maintain soil health, control pests and weeds, and grow a variety of veggies, fruit and flowers. Apprentices also gain management experience as they help organize volunteer, school and summer camp groups. Apprentices deepen their on-farm education by attending meetings of the Collaborative Regional Alliance of Farmer Training (CRAFT) of Eastern Massachusetts. These farm visits allow apprentices to compare the growing practices of different farms. (more…)

Gibbet Hill Farm seeks Two Interns

Gibbet Hill Farm is a small-scale organic vegetable farm located in Groton, MA.  It is unique in that it is part of a larger restaurant group, and exists solely to provide those businesses with produce.  The group consists of the Gibbet Hill Grill and the Barn at Gibbet Hill, both located adjacent to the farm, as well as the Scarlet Oak Tavern in Hingham, and Fireside Catering in Burlington.  So in addition to the ubiquitous challenges of vegetable farming, interns will be exposed to the intersection of farming and restaurants, and help work through the inevitable challenges that arise from that.  This is a unique chance to work side-by-side with folks that are leading the growing ‘Farm to Fork’ movement in Massachusetts. In this our second season, we will also be starting a 50-member CSA to serve our local area.

We are looking for two interns, one for the whole season and one for the summer months.  Both positions will require hard work and good attitudes.  Farm work is physically and emotionally demanding and requires stamina, creativity, flexibility, and a great sense of humor.  Interns will work outside in all weather conditions and for long hours which will vary depending on the season, but will average 40-60 hours/week.  Must be able to lift 50lbs. and not be afraid to get dirty.  Experience is strongly preferred, but training for the right candidate will be considered.  Relevant experience includes:  tractor and machinery operation, planting and harvesting, CSA experience.  Must have burning desire to learn about small-scale organic farming practices as well as interest in local food movement, and be an upbeat, hard-working person with ability to see the bright side in any situation.
