Location: Westmoreland, New Hampshire
Fertile Fields Farm is a diversified organic farm located in Westmoreland, New Hampshire, near the Connecticut River. We farm 2 ½ acres of level, well-drained riverbed soil. We are certified organic since 2005 and market our produce at the Brattleboro Farmer’s Market and through a 35 family CSA. We have four greenhouses, a pond, three beehives, and grow over 50 varieties of vegetables, herbs, flowers and berries.
We seek interns who love working outdoors, being physically active and learning about being a beginning farmer. Experience is not necessary. A sense of humor is a plus. Special projects for 2010 include new greenhouse completion, building a walk-in cooler (both spring projects) and building on our first year of incorporating nutrient dense crop practices.
These are some of the skills you can learn:
Planning a garden and rotating crops, fencing and trellising, making raised beds, starting seedlings, greenhouse management, planting and transplanting, cultivating the soil and mulching, managing soil fertility, pests and diseases, cover cropping, harvesting, post-harvest handling, using farm tools, building a compost pile using vermiculture, maintaining organic certification and business management of a small farm, and teaching farming skills to children.
We can support you by being a mentor and assist in developing a research project. We value new ideas and are willing to discuss your needs. We will design a learning experience with you that incorporates seasonal farm tasks with your learning agenda.
We prefer interns who are available to help harvest Friday from 5-8 pm. We can accommodate interns for 6-8 hours a week and student practicums for college credit 20 or 40 hours a week. As a working shareholder you will receive a basket of vegetables each week, with some herbs and flowers, and occasional raw honey and berries.
