Assisting in the day-to-day operation of The Fair Food Farmstand, The Fair Food non-profit organization’s retail location at the Reading Terminal Market. Located in the historic Reading Terminal Market, the Fair Food Farmstand carries a variety of fresh produce, meats, poultry, dairy, eggs and cheese from organic and sustainable farms throughout the southeast Pennsylvania region. We emphasize local and seasonal foods and products from small-scale producers such as humanely raised meats, organic and specialty fruits and vegetables, and raw milk cheeses. Currently open 8am to 6pm Mon-Sat and 9am to 5pm Sunday, the goals of The Farmstand are to provide an access point for local/sustainably-raised foods, educate consumers about the benefits of buying local; and provide training and reallife experience for farmers selling direct wholesale. Fair Food is the mission-driven non-profit organization dedicated to providing local food to the marketplace and promoting a humane sustainable agriculture system for our region. Real Food Farm is a new urban agriculture project of Civic Works, Baltimore’s Service Corps. Located in Northeast Baltimore’s Clifton Park, the Farm will sell fruits, herbs and vegetables for local institutions and communities using “hoop houses” – low-cost, plastic greenhouses. In October, Real Food Farm teamed up with the Safe Healing Foundation to build Hoop Village, the first stage of education and demonstration hoop houses. Garden LINKS will focus on local food production with youth and community engagement at the Sacred Heart Food Bank Garden and the Junior High Hoop House Garden. Garden LINKS will be coordinating Food Roots gardens’ production and processing the bounty for programs serving low-income families and for Food Roots’ micro enterprise programs. May will be busy with garden coordination, volunteer recruitment and production. In June the Garden LINKS will be in charge of garden management as production ramps up. July and August will include a lot of work in the community with youth and volunteers, special events at the farmers’ market and outreach. July and August will be the busiest times with planning and activities for fall garden production, along with the bulk of the harvest. The position requires critical thinking skills; ability to plan, organize and implement plans; being computer literate with Microsoft Office, work independently and as a team. Knowledge of gardening and vegetable production techniques, sustainable agriculture skills and experience working with youth community food programs is preferred. (more…)

Jones Valley Urban Farm is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture and healthy eating. We started by turning vacant land into production organic farms, working with neighborhoods, high school students, and volunteers. In the last 8 years we have become a community-wide source for local organic produce, hands-on science education, and policy advocacy.
Our produce and flowers are sold to local restaurants, at farmers’ markets, and through food box subscriptions to help support our programs. We have developed an accredited high school science course in conjunction with the Alabama School of Fine Arts, an elementary nutrition education field trip program called Seed 2 Plate, and we offer adult gardening and nutrition classes in conjunction with developing community gardens. Each summer we hire graduates of our high school program to work as farm interns and we also offer focused college internships.
Jones Valley Urban Farm added the 25 acre Mt Laurel farm in 2009. This working farm adds a tremendous amount of capacity for production of vegetables, fruits and flowers, as well as providing greater opportunities for JVUF to provide educational and outreach opportunities. (more…)

The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) is a national alliance of family farm, food, conservation, rural, and urban organizations that together take common positions on federal agriculture and food policies, and support grassroots efforts to win long-term policy change. Job location is NSAC’s DC office on Capitol Hill.
NSAC’s Executive Director provides the leadership to implement the strategic vision and coordinates all aspects of the Coalition’s work. The Executive Director promotes the mission of NSAC through a wide variety of public engagements and through overseeing efficient and responsible use of organizational resources as well as the implementation of priorities and objectives established by the organization’s Organizational Council, Policy Council, and Grassroots Council. The position involves leading two teams of 7-10 high school aged students in the provision of an award-winning intensive garden education program. This position is part of an overall ecological approach towards nutrition education that provides teens with hands-on experiences growing, cooking and selling healthy foods. The goal of the program is to foster youth leadership; improve dietary knowledge, habits and status of Philadelphia youth; increase knowledge of food systems; increase access to healthy foods; empower teens to become peer educators; improve/maintain high levels of academic performance; and provide teens with job training in urban agriculture. The Environmental Working Group (EWG), an environmental research and advocacy organization with offices in Washington, DC, Ames, IA, and Oakland CA, seeks a Legislative and Policy Analyst to support our efforts to reform U.S. agricultural and environmental policy. The Legislative and Policy Analyst will help implement an integrated approach that combines research, communications, and government affairs with a primary focus on implementation of the U.S. 2008 farm bill and advocacy for reform when the farm bill is reauthorized in 2012. The primary objectives are to: (1) reform crop and insurance subsidies to mitigate their effect on the environment and developing countries, (2) increase funding for and the effectiveness of USDA conservation programs, and (3) ensure energy provisions encourage truly sustainable biofuels and biomass energy alternatives.
