Location: Baltimore, Maryland
Real Food Farm is a new urban agriculture project of Civic Works, Baltimore’s Service Corps. Located in Northeast Baltimore’s Clifton Park, the Farm will sell fruits, herbs and vegetables for local institutions and communities using “hoop houses” – low-cost, plastic greenhouses. In October, Real Food Farm teamed up with the Safe Healing Foundation to build Hoop Village, the first stage of education and demonstration hoop houses. Real Food Farm is pleased to announce an Americorps VISTA position opening at this time.
The Community Education and Outreach Coordinator will manage the distribution component of Real Food Farm, developing innovative direct-to-consumer models for local neighborhoods, and marketing and promoting Real Food Farm produce in creative and educational ways to address healthy lifestyle issues and increase the utilization of fresh food. The coordinator will occasionally assist in farm tasks including the construction of new hoop-houses, repairs, harvesting, cleaning, planting, and maintaining produce. The development of relationships and one-on-one interaction makes this a job perfect for those who wish to make a difference at the community level while establishing innovative examples for sustainable agriculture enterprise in Baltimore City. Necessary skills include experience with food or nutrition, valid driver’s license, moderate computer skills, design experience (or willingness to learn), effective communication, and flexibility. The VISTA position is a one year commitment, with modest stipend & tuition award, 40 hours/week, including nights and weekends. Interviewing now for start in April.
