NC: The Raleigh Downtown Farmer’s Market seeks Intern

Hours: Wednesdays, 7 am – 3:30 pm; plus additional hours during the week (approximately 10 hours/week)

Mid April – October

This position will assist in the marketing and operations of the Raleigh Downtown Farmers Market, a program produced by the Downtown Raleigh Alliance. The intern will have the opportunity to learn about farmers’ market management, event planning and management, volunteer management, social networking, customer service, and community development. It is also a physical job, and eligible applicants need to be able to be outside, lift heavy objects, and be on their feet for the duration of the market. (more…)

The Youth Agriculture Project seeks Summer Crew Leaders to help young people build life and job skills through hands-on learning about food, nutrition
and agriculture. The Youth Agriculture Project is a 4-H program of the University of Vermont Extension. Summer Work and Learn is a summer job-training program for older teenagers. For many, this is their first paid job. The Youth Agriculture Project uses farming as a vehicle to help youth develop life and job skills such as communication, teambuilding, and leadership. Youth grow food crops together, sell their crops at the farmers’ market, donate to local food
shelves, and visit other farms. Crew Leaders are expected to have – and to model – solid work ethics, willingness to learn, and the ability to work as a member of a team. Youth Ag’s interns are a vital part of the program, so a background in farming and/or working with youth is preferred. (more…)

The Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project Local Development Corporation (MARP) is a not-for-profit, 501(c)3 organization incorporated in January 1999, founded with the mission to restore the “Main Street” of the Fort Greene and Clinton Hill community to a bustling, economically vital neighborhood commercial corridor that provides entrepreneurial, cultural, recreational, and employment opportunities for all those who live, work, study or have an interest in the area. On the economic development side, MARP serves a diverse community of approximately 150 merchants, with 97% of businesses locally-owned and 78% minority or woman-owned. Of the 30,000+ residents in the community, roughly 8,500 residents live in the Whitman and Ingersoll public housing developments, which front Myrtle Avenue. Metro DC: growing SOUL seeks Volunteers

growing SOUL — Sustainable Opportunities for Universal Learning — is a new volunteer run non-profit in the DC metropolitan area.  We are working with Will Allen on creating a Sustainable Foods Training Center that teaches Compost-to-table Zero-Waste food production as well as recording our work of preserving the Culinary Arts in our virtual “Culinerati Files.”  We were just written up in the Washington Post and AARP Bulletin along with Anna Lappe and her new book, “Diet for a Hot Planet” and are rapidly gaining traction with several sites in Montgomery county.

We are seeking someone experienced with aquaponics and closed-loop nitrogen cycles to head up our growing model. The model includes field crop growing as well. This is currently a part-time volunteer position that we are growing funding for so that it will become one of our first salaried positions along with our Director of Composting, Volunteer Coordinator and Director of Operations.  We are also seeking bloggers who would like an outlet for sharing the progress of the Good Food Revolution and someone to keep a calendar on all of the local Food related events. Community Action Duluth seeks a Summer Garden Coordinator to work with low-income people to grow food. The purpose of this project is to help people and communities learn about and start to practice sustainable agriculture through gardening and to increase access to affordable and healthy food. Supervising 4 Youth Employment Service workers low-income youth ages 18-21 and community volunteers , the garden coordinator will develop a plan to grow food on urban vacant lots, teach gardening skills to people, create a marketing plan for the project, oversee the process of planting, weeding and harvesting the gardens, and find opportunities to increase neighborhood resident’s involvement in the gardens.
