Boston: The Student Conservation Association seeks Interns

This year SCA is offering a new sustainability program to host interns who can live locally in Boston for the summer and serve at an internship focused on some aspect of sustainability.

The interns are required to have local housing and will receive a $250 subsistence allowance to help with general living expenses and commuting costs. The interns are also eligible for AmeriCorps Education Awards upon completion of service that can be used towards future education or current loans. The award amount varies depending on number of hours served. Most positions are 10-11 weeks in length, but some are as long as a year.

BOSTON SUSTAINABLE FOOD POSITION DESCRIPTIONS:

#11405- Revision Urban Farm- Sustainability Urban Farm Supervisory Intern: June 2nd- August 18th 2010

ReVision Urban Farm is a one-acre urban farm in Boston. We are associated with a homeless shelter for mothers. We work to bring healthy, fresh food to our underserved neighborhood and our shelter residents. We do this while teaching our community to farm and are active participants in their community. We teach youth through a job training program, we teach volunteers, and we teach through workshops. The training program is a dynamic exploration into community organizing, business development, and nutritional education. You will develop leadership and community organizing skills while learning to grow food in an urban setting.

Teach curriculum; coordinate Urban Farm participants; assist in and contribute to participant performance evaluation; assist at our farm stand on Saturdays and farming and horticulture activities on urban farm as needed.

#11548- Groundwork Sommerville- Sustainability Green Team Supervisory Intern: June 2nd- August 11th 2010

The Green Team is part of a national effort by Groundwork USA, a network of 18 organizations across the country to create sustainable communities through partnership. At Groundwork Somerville, our Green Team is made up of three groups (Urban Agriculture, Sustainable Landscaping, and Green Line Green Spaces), each managed by one Supervisor. The goal of the Green Line Green Spaces Green Team is to organize other youth in Somerville to voice their opinions on how land should be developed once the Green Line comes to our community. This is a REAL chance to make a major difference in our city! Each Green Team is made up of 6-8 high school employees, between the ages of 14-18. The youth work for 20 hours for seven weeks and are asked to do 21 hours of service through the summer. Each team is also assisted by a counselor in training, who is also a Green Team alum. As Supervisor for the Green Line Green Spaces Green Team, the following tasks will be performed: Work 30 hours each week (20 in programming and 10 in planning/admin); help youth to organize community meetings for other youth to discuss the impact of the Green Line extension on land use planning in Somerville; oversee daily team function; act as disciplinarian for youth on Green Team (ensure timeliness, etc); promote Groundwork Somerville at all community events; participate in at least one overnight trip with other teams; assist youth with outreach to youth community in Somerville for community meetings; attend weekly staff meetings; participate in community events; bike with youth to all sites.

#11670- SCA Boston- Sustainability Intern- June 2nd- August 19th 2010

Provide coordination and support to SCA regional office staff for the Boston Sustainability community internship program. Specific duties will include: coordinate bi-weekly activities and projects for a group of 9 local sustainability interns (activities may be educational, recreational or social in nature and will be designed to promote affinity to SCA and to foster a sense of team and community among the interns); visit local sustainability sites and document each which may include photography, interviewing, and written reports for both internal use and media; provide some administrative program support to regional office staff and have opportunity to visit and document local high school age crews; coordinate a Google documents page in order to share stories; work with SCA headquarters with PR and outreach through local publications, blogging, and writing stories for SCA’s website and SCA e-newsletter.
