Vermont: Merck Forest & Farmland Center seeks Farm Manager

Location: Rupert, Vermont

The Farm Manager is responsible for all operations, production, and research of the organic farm program at a multidimensional outdoor education center.   The position oversees farm staff and helps to train & educate interns.  Education of school children and program participants is a critical aspect of the job.  Coordination of research  projects by outside professionals and participation with other programs at Merck Forest are integral aspects of the position.  The Farm Manager will help the Executive Director to define the role of the Farm within the composite operations of the organization.

Job Duties:

Planning

  • Evaluate the current operations of the Farm
  • Help to develop a comprehensive Farm Management Plan
  • Create annual and regular work plans to enhance efficient farm operations

Farm Management

  • Creation of a clean, safe and organized farm environment
  • Supervision/direction of farm staff, helpers, and volunteers
  • Basic maintenance of equipment
  • Clear, organized  reporting and record keeping
  • Regular communication with Executive Director
  • Assist in budgeting.  Awareness of financial responsibility in approved purchasing

Production

  • Take the lead in annual crop production planning
  • Prepare and maintain growing sites; plant, tend, and harvest crops
  • Manage the breeding, husbandry, and harvest of livestock
  • Work with Marketing Director on farm product markets

Research

  • Plan and implement innovative research projects
  • Solicit and coordinate research of outside professionals
  • Encourage and help to direct student research

Education

  • Clearly express the theory and performance of farm practices and goals to students, staff and guests
  • Support Education Director in program offerings

Other

  • Enthusiastically participate and assist in other programs and activities of Merck Forest and Farmland Center
  • Gain a working understanding and manipulation of off-grid energy production

Skills and Qualifications:

§  Thorough comprehension of all aspects of crop and livestock production

§  Ability to communicate complex topics in simple language

§  Several years farm management experience

§  Mechanical intuition and skills required

§   Knowledge of all Organic Farming standards, theories and practices

§  Ability to work cooperatively and productively in group planning and production

§  Comfort in harsh natural environment and with long hours

§  Flexibility in scheduling and attitude

§  Physically able to perform all farm tasks

§  Strong organizational skills

§  Knowledge of and experience with field research processes

§  Current knowledge of trends in farm science
