NYC: The Lantern Group seeks Summer Analyst

The Lantern Group, Inc. is a not-for-profit organization that was established in 1997 to increase the supply of affordable permanent housing. Since then, the organization has successfully created over $170 million in affordable housing assets, translating to the development of more than 1,300 rental units in over nine completed developments, three developments in construction, and seven developments in the early stages of planning and financing. Lantern provides affordable housing to low income individuals and families and special needs populations, including formerly homeless individuals and families.

This position will play a key role in helping to develop a new affiliated entity, Lantern Social Ventures (LSV) and will report to the Director of Lantern Social Ventures. Designed to promote economic opportunity and independence of Lantern Tenants, Lantern Social Ventures is forming a series of businesses that will provide job training and placement. These businesses should be profitable, sustainable enterprises, and will be food-related. They may include a culinary training program, a food service business, as well as several small retail operations.

This position will serve as a program developer, helping to create the foundations of this new program.

Responsibilities
The summer associate will support the creation and operations of LSV in a variety of ways:
- Perform a rigorous analysis of existing operations, identifying areas for change
- Build financial models to inform decision making
- Develop a business plan for Lantern Social Ventures
- Develop a proposal for a successful food-based social enterprise, and create an implementation plan
- Research local and national models of innovative, related programs (as needed)

Skills/Qualifications
The ideal candidate is experienced in program development and implementation, and has a background in business, small business development, and/or social enterprise. She/he possesses the ability to work independently and successfully in a start-up operation.

Other skills must include:
- Strong analytical and financial skills
- Strong interpersonal and communications skills
- Demonstrated ability to be a team player
- Demonstrated strong organizational skills and the ability to perform complex tasks with limited supervision
- Graduate students in business, policy and planning are encouraged to apply.
