Slow Food USA seeks to inspire and engage everyday people through grassroots advocacy and local projects that move towards a just and sustainable food system. A non-profit movement-building organization, Slow Food USA has 225 volunteer-led chapters across the country,
representing more than 28,000 members and reaching a network of 160,000 people. Slow Food USA advocates for food and farming policy that is good for the public, good for farmers and workers, and good for the planet; creates youth programs to bring the values of eating local,
sustainable and just food to schools and campuses; and preserves and promotes vanishing foods and food traditions. Slow Food USA has seen explosive growth over the past 18 months, and we anticipate that growth continuing. The Slow Food USA national headquarters is located in
Brooklyn, NY.
Slow Food USA is seeking a motivated, strategic and highly skilled Director of Operations & Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The Director of Operations & CFO will be responsible for developing a strategic operational and financial management infrastructure, and will be charged
with implementing and overseeing all financial and operational systems, protocols and policies. Areas of oversight include budget, accounting and finance, human resources, facilities and Information Technology contracts. The Director of Operations & CFO will report to the President and will be a member of the senior leadership team, working closely with other director-level positions, program staff, and the Board of Directors as appropriate.
The Director of Operations & CFO will:
• Build and manage a dynamic team to support operations, budget, finances, human resources, legal and IT efforts
• Supervise an Operations Manager and Operations Assistant.
• Develop and implement short and long-term operational and budget plans that will support a growing organization.
• Aggressively manage revenue and expense budgets, keeping senior leadership apprised of key movements and trends.
• Build strategic accounting systems and create processes for efficient reporting and forecasting.
• Oversee the development of a strategic, mission-aligned investment plan for funds received.
• Oversee all payables and disbursements.
• Oversee financial management, accounting, and IT systems vendor contracts to ensure timely reporting and execution of annual audits.
• Facilitate creation of new IT systems and capacities.
• Serve as a primary liaison to the Board Finance Committee and lead budget approval processes.
• Manage financial agreements with Slow Food International.
• Manage legal oversight and ensure compliance with relevant laws and standards, liaising with pro bono attorneys.
• Coordinate and disseminate operational information to staff.
Job Requirements and Skills
• Minimum 5 years experience in operations and financial management.
• Excellent organizational and managerial skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to master complex issues and convey information clearly for varied audiences.
• Excellent team member, skilled at working across departments and building and maintaining strong relationships with colleagues, staff, partners and stakeholders. Entrepreneurial and flexible working style.
• Strategic planner, capable of creating and implementing new policies, identifying opportunities, and finding solutions independently in an environment without extensive systems and personnel support.
• Capacity to manage, direct and lead in a fast growing organization.
• Familiarity with Quickbooks accounting software, experience guiding internal audits, and general knowledge of non-profit law all considered a plus.
Classification: Full-Time Exempt Employee.
