Slow Food USA seeks to inspire and engage everyday people through grassroots advocacy and local projects that move towards a just and sustainable food system. A non-profit movement-building organization, Slow Food USA has 225 volunteer-led chapters across the country,
representing more than 28,000 members and reaching a network of 160,000 people. Slow Food USA advocates for food and farming policy that is good for the public, good for farmers and workers, and good for the planet; creates youth programs to bring the values of eating local,
sustainable and just food to schools and campuses; and preserves and promotes vanishing foods and food traditions. Slow Food USA has seen explosive growth over the past 18 months, and we anticipate that growth continuing. The Slow Food USA national headquarters is located in
Brooklyn, NY.
We are seeking a motivated, strategic and highly skilled Program Manager who will be responsible for overseeing Slow Food USA’s youth work, leading the development of innovative projects and campaigns that move towards good, clean, and fair food practices. The Program Manager also works in collaboration with the program staff to strategize, develop, and implement national grassroots campaigns that engage our network and the broader public to bring about change in the food system. Areas of work include staff supervision, work plan implementation, budget, and alliances.
Responsibilities
• Lead projects/campaigns that inspire the network and broader public to work towards good, clean, and fair food practices and policies (locally and nationally)
• Oversee youth-related work; particularly the development and implementation of a strategic, mission-driven Slow Food On Campus program (currently 35 chapters) that engages college and university communities to bring about change in the food system.
• Supervise the Program Coordinator for the Slow Food On Campus program
• Collaborate with other Program Managers for policy campaign development and network engagement trainings
• Participate as the SFUSA representative in national alliances as needed
• Develop and manage work plans and budgets for assigned work areas
• Contribute to external and internal communications as needed (e.g. blog posts, publications)
• Represent the organization externally as needed (e.g. media, conferences, public speaking events)
• Participate fully in the Program staff team to help implement the Program Department work plan
• Participate in organizational projects as needed
Qualifications
• Minimum 5 years employment in a non-profit organization as a community organizer (or related position)
• Minimum 2 years working with youth (ages 13 – 21)
• Minimum 2 years experience supervising paid staff
• Excellent written and verbal skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with a diverse range of constituencies
• Able to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong alignment with Slow Food USA’s mission
Preferred
• Experience in projects that address the food system
• Experience working with low-income, immigrant, and/or communities of color
• Experience working in alliances/networks
• Experience with campaign strategy development and implementation
• Experience developing and conducting organizing skills or leadership trainings
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
Classification: Full-time exempt.
Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience, benefits included.
