Member Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop models of accessibility for low income Latina women in Whatcom County, facilitating the ability of participants in the Cocinas Program to cook healthier traditional foods in their homes.
  • Provide outreach and classroom support for the Cocinas Sanas – Healthy Kitchens program using local organic ingredients in traditional Mexican cuisine to form a healthy diet and combat diabetes and obesity in the Latino community.
  • Develop and coordinate learning fieldtrips and small scale crop production with participants of the Cocinas Sanas Program.
  • Implement Cocinas Sanas and accessibility programming with Latino women and youth
  • Assist with the development of  a peer to peer educational program for Latinas to increase knowledge about access to healthy local organic ingredients
  • Recruit program participants, train volunteers and develop outreach and marketing materials
  • Assist community members to build Health Homes to optimize and take charge of their health
  • Will receive leadership development, understanding oppression, undoing racism and like trainings to assist in organization’s mission to restore justice to food, land and cultural practices

Qualifications:

  • Fully Bilingual written and spoken English and Spanish
  • Valid driver’s license and transportation
  • Experience with Latino and/or farm worker communities and youth, passion for farm worker justice and social justice
  • Enjoys organic farming, cooking, understands healthy eating and health, knowledge of traditional Mexican cuisine
  • Outgoing, highly motivated, self-directed, able to problem-solve, able to work independently but enjoys collaboration, able to give and receive constructive criticism that builds a team environment
  • Excited to develop, implement, market and coordinate community based projects with participants
  • General office and computer skills (PC based operating system, Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Comfortable working outside in a variety of conditions and groups
  • On farm experience with small scale diversified crops a plus
  • This is a national service position–applicant must be willing to commit to term of service

Position Location: Bellingham, WA is 90 miles north of Seattle and 52 miles south of Vancouver, B.C. http://www.cob.org/

Members Receive: $1,050/month pay, health insurance, L&I, and $5,350 education award upon completion of term. Member may request loan forbearance and may be eligible for subsidized childcare.

Position Duration:  AmeriCorps members serve 40 hrs/week for 10.5 months. Hours are Monday – Friday varies from 8 am – 7:00 pm.  Flexibility is required for evening and weekend events.
