Chicago: Author seeks Book Research Intern

BOOK RESEARCH INTERNSHIP
I am a Chicago-based writer working on a book called Seasonal Markets of the Heartland, to be published by University of Illinois Press. Last summer and fall I took off in my sporty red Mustang to explore farmers markets in eight states:  Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri.  Now back at my desk in Chicago, I find a need for a detail-oriented intern to help pull together the final sections.  The book will be 65,000 words (about 250 pages) with about 80 color photographs.

Intern duties will include:
. Compile glossary of terms related to sustainable food production, maintaining a thorough resource list
. Check facts as directed and compile list of sources.
. Obtain and file interview release forms (about 110) and photo release forms (about 50) from individuals mentioned throughout the book.
. Confirm details for about 65 farmers markets.

. Assemble back-of-book appendices:
      – Index of names and organizations
      – Recipe index (fewer than 20 recipes)
      – “Additional reading” list of books, resources
. Assist in scheduling telephone interviews

The successful candidate has some training in the principles of journalism, is organized and has a keen and consistent eye for
detail.  An interest in sustainable food production is a must.   Location in Midwest is an advantage.

Timing is by end of 2010.  This is an unpaid internship of approximately 50 hours over three to four months (an average of six hours/week, but with sufficient flexibility to accommodate exam times, etc.).  The student will receive credit in the book as a research intern, as well as ten copies to be used as work samples/holiday gifts (publication date is early 2012).  I also have been known to be generous with praise and serve as glowing reference when all goes well.

Applicants should send a letter of interest describing appropriate experience, plus one reference to janine@rustickitchen.com.
