QBG Mission
Queens Botanical Garden is an urban oasis where people,plants and cultures are celebrated through inspiring gardens,innovative educational programs and demonstrations of environmental stewardship. The Queens Botanical Garden (QBG) is a private non-profit cultural institution located on 39 acres of New York City public land in Flushing, New York. The Garden serves nearly 200,000 visitors each year; a visitor survey reveals that 75% of all visitors speak a language other than English at home. The Garden has, therefore, committed itself to addressing the complex and ever changing needs of its diverse community and to being the place where people, plants and cultures meet. The Compost Coordinator for the NYC Compost Project in Queens is based at the Queens Botanical Garden and reports tothe Compost Project Manager in Queens. He/She is responsible for developing and leading workshops and trainings, tabling at a wide range of outreach events and activities, and helping to provide technical assistance to community compost sites. He/she must be able to track all of their activities and efforts and submit data to either the project manager or BWPRR as needed.
Compost Coordinator
- Full time position, with benefits
- Weekend and evening hours as needed

Responsibilities:
- Teach workshops on outdoor composting, vermicomposting (worm bin), and natural lawn care techniques to the general public, schoolchildren, groundskeepers, and professional landscapers
- Able to lead Master Composter Certificate training (train-the-trainer course)
- Disseminate information about composting at public outreach events
- Help develop, administer and tally program evaluations
- Capture photos of programs and projects
- Help guide and track Master Composter activities throughout year
- Encourage Master Composters to reach out and revitalize community-based composting sites in NYC
- Maintain home composting demonstration site. Engage community in maintenance of demo site; track volunteer participation
- Develop additional community based compost sites/year guided by demo site model; track sites as needed
- Locate and promote community gardens that accept leaf litter and promote leaf composting as appropriate
- Encourage and track composting efforts at schools; provide guidance as needed
- Promote Golden Apple Awards & other relevant BWPRR programs to schools
- Manage sales of compost bins, compost crank, and any other compost-related equipment
Requirements/Skills:
- Bachelors Degree (Preferably in Environmental or Horticultural Science or another related field)
- Minimum two years of related work experience
- Outgoing and comfortable in a wide range of environments
- Experience with a wide range of computer applications (Excel, MS Word, Outlook, +)
- Valid drivers license
- Comfortable public speaker, ease in leading workshops, trainings, +
- Ability to speak clearly on behalf of the NYC Compost Project
- Ability to prioritize work load and work independently
- Knowledge of compost science, indoor and outdoor composting techniques, and NYC Compost Program and commitment to composting
