New York Restoration Project (NYRP) carries out Founder Bette Midler’s dream of a cleaner, greener New York City. To that end, NYRP restores, revitalizes and develops under-resourced parks and community gardens throughout the city’s five boroughs, working to ensure that every New York City resident, family and neighborhood has access to vibrant, green spaces. By providing enriching educational and community programming, NYRP works to instill both individual and civic respect for nature and responsibility for contributing to New York City’s environmental sustainability.

To address the needs of New York City’s growing population, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced on Earth Day 2007 that community greening and urban tree planting would be a major priority of PlaNYC – the city’s long term sustainability initiative. Recognizing the benefits trees provide New York City’s residents, neighborhoods, and the environment, PlaNYC established the ambitious goal of planting one million new trees throughout the city’s five boroughs over the next decade.

MillionTreesNYC is a partnership between Mayor Bloomberg’s PlaNYC initiative, the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and New York Restoration Project (NYRP), as well as community, nonprofit, government and corporate partners throughout the city. (more…)

Green Youth Farm Program

(Mid-April through mid-October)

PURPOSE: Join a team of enthusiastic, dedicated, and mission-oriented horticulturists and youth workers to teach urban youth how to grow, market, and cook with sustainably produced produce on one of three Green Youth Farms in the Chicagoland area! The Green Youth Farm is seeking a Grower for its Washington Park/Dyett High School site on the south side of Chicago. The Grower will work with the GYF Coordinator and Manager to be an integral part of the growing, marketing, and distribution of produce to farmer’s markets and buyers.

Candidates should have high energy for and interest in sustainable agriculture and youth, as well as a commitment to teamwork.  The ideal candidate for this position will be well-versed in organic growing techniques, able to demonstrate the ability to excite kids about the work we are doing, and able to work as part of a team to foster respect for the earth and the food we eat in program participants and the communities the Green Youth Farms serve. New York: Capital District Community Gardens seeks Urban Farmer

Capital District Community Gardens www.cdcg.org , operates The Produce Project, an entrepreneurial job training program for High School students in Upstate New York. Under the Farmer’s supervision, students use high tunnels and other season extension techniques to grow organic vegetables and sell them to local restaurants through much of the year. Students receive food and monetary stipends for their participation. The Farmer should have practical experience, organic preferred, in farm management from composting to market sales. *Overview: *Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) were developed by the USDA and the FDA in 1998 as a means of minimizing the risks of on-farm microbial contamination in fruits and vegetables.The practices were initially voluntary, but in recent years, produce buyers have been requiring GAPs certification, essentially making GAPs mandatory for produce growers who want to maintain contracts with those buyers.As food safety becomes an increasingly important aspect of the produce market
environment, the number of produce growers in Vermont seeking GAPs certification has quadrupled.The GAPs Outreach Coordinator at UVM Extension’s Center for Sustainable Agriculture is seeking an assistant to help provide educational and technical assistance to fruit and vegetable growers and produce buyers in Vermont. Missouri: URBAVORE seeks Apprentices

New life is emerging on Kansas City’s East Side; a living, breathing organism that both feeds from and provides food for its urban surroundings.  BADSEED Farm moved up the food chain, and is taking root on new land and in the new form of URBAVORE.

URBAVORE is presently seeking one part-time apprentice and two volunteer apprentices for the 2011 growing season to aid in the creation of one of the largest and most diverse urban farms in the nation.  This season, apprentices are tasked with much more than assisting to produce a crop of vegetables; they must also help to establish infrastructure, perennial fruit plantings, animal pastures and diverse natural habitats on 13 acres of raw land only 8 miles from downtown Kansas City.  In exchange for 30 hours of labor weekly, URBAVORE will provide part-time apprentices with free accommodation at BADSEED’s downtown storefront (fully equipped with a commercial kitchen and comfortable amenities), a share of the farm’s bounty, and many opportunities for learning.  Apprentices will develop skills in no-till, “beyond-organic” vegetable production, integrated livestock management, orchard planting & tree crop maintenance, windrow composting, direct marketing, food preservation, homesteading skills, and more.
