Connecticut: CT Grass Fed, Inc. seeks Intern

CT Grass Fed, Inc. is opening the first all-local, pasture-raised, nose-to-tail butcher shop in Connecticut. The shop will be opening in the Saugatuck area of Westport, CT late summer/early fall. We are looking for someone interested in the sustainable food industry with experience and knowledge in PR and marketing to help us with the successful launch of our retail store. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on PR and marketing experience while learning the behind the scenes work required to launch a retail food business.

About Us:

Our mission is to bring back the neighborhood butcher with an emphasis on whole animal butchery, education, and the creation of community. We will provide locally raised meats, prepared foods, restaurant wholesale, catering, instructional programs, and an exceptional shopping experience to customers in its Fairfield County. To execute our mission, we will:

  • Follow a nose-to-tail philosophy and use every part of the animal (one of the few butcher shops in the country to do so)
  • Champion the freshness, flavor and healthful benefits of pasture-raised meat
  • Support the growth and viability of small local farmers
  • Promote sustainable eating and delicious preparation
  • Resurrect the role of the neighborhood butcher as a craftsman and educator

Roles and responsibilities:

  • Contact local newspapers and media, national publications, industry websites, and bloggers to promote our business
  • Draft press releases to send to media
  • Find new networks to increase our promotional reach
  • Manage our social media promotion and suggest new ways to increase our reach through the use of social media
  • Sourcing, writing and editing posts for our blog
  • Help design and develop content for website
  • Draft monthly newsletter
  • Manage outgoing and incoming email correspondence
  • Once shop is open, develop promotional campaigns
  • Assist with advertising and setup of promotional events (this could include 3-5 evening or weekend butchering demonstrations or parties)

Required qualities and skills:

Our owners are young (in their 30’s), energetic, busy professionals, looking for highly capable, creative employees who will be as excited about the opportunity as they are.

  • Experience in PR, advertising, and marketing a must (a major in one of these fields is a plus)
  • Enthusiastic, friendly, and self-motivated
  • Excellent communication and telephone skills
  • Outstanding writing and editing skills
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Creative problem solver
  • Active social media user (Facebook/Linkedin/Twitter)
  • Web design skills a plus
  • Share our passion for food, the ethical treatment of animals, and a sustainable lifestyle

Jobs details:

  • Hours: approx 10 per week
  • Compensation: this internship does not pay a salary, but we will pay a monthly bonus based on performance
  • Minimum three months (potential to become a fully paid internship/job)
  • Location: shop is located walking distance from Westport train station, but we are currently under construction so you will be able to work from home on your own computer
  • Days: Flexible (from home), will have some required meetings on Mondays or Fridays, schedule to be discussed
  • Weekly reports (and phone discussions throughout the week) will be required to keep us up to date on the progress you’re making.
