Crown Point Ecology Center is looking for an Organic Farm Harvest Coordinator

Crown Point Ecology Center is seeking to fill a full-time Organic Farm Harvest Coordinator position.  In addition to working alongside the Organic Farm Manager on all aspects of growing and maintaining crops on the Crown Point farm, the Harvest Coordinator is responsible for oversight of the CSA and Foodbank harvests, and plant production for the Organic Plant Sale.  In addition, the Harvest Coordinator will help train and supervise apprentices, interns, CSA sharers and volunteers on farm tasks, participate in staff meetings and assist with fund raising or grant writing as related to the farm when necessary.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Major Activity: Coordinates Harvests and Sales

• Schedules daily and weekly harvests

• Schedules CSA member work shifts and maintains shift fulfillment records

• Manually harvests crops

• Ensure appropriate post-harvest handling of product

• Oversees wash/pack operations to ensure proper packing, maintain quality standards

• Assists with accurate records of amounts of produce distributed through each avenue (Foodbank, CSA, special events)

• Assist with coordination of plants for Annual Organic Plant Sale

• Makes, packs and ships wholesale sales where appropriate

Major Activity: Supports Organic Farmer

• Plants, cultivates and harvests production areas, tends greenhouses.  Assists with tillage and irrigation as needed.

• Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of tools and supplies

• Co-creates end of season survey as well as collects responses and compiles acquired data

• Participates in future planning

Major Activity: Education and Outreach

• Assists in training and supervision of seasonal staff, CSA members and farm volunteers on farm tasks and organic farming methods in use at Crown Point

• Assists Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting volunteers for the farm

• Coordinates Orientation for CSA members

• Attend Garden Committee meetings and help set agenda for those meetings

• Creates and implements programs for CSA members including spring and fall potlucks, organic gardening classes and cooking classes as requested

• Assists with the weekly CSA newsletter

• Speaks at gatherings of other groups on food or farming related topics

• Represents Crown Point at other local groups involved in sustainable agriculture and/or local foods such as Greater Summit County Food Policy Coalition, Slow Food, E4S Summit and Countryside Conservancy events as appropriate.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Education:

♦ High School Diploma required.  Degree or equivalent in a relevant field preferred.

Experience:

♦ Two years of experience with CSA farming required with more preferred

♦ Experience in basic organic farming techniques required

♦ Proficiency with hand-tools required

♦ Experience with farm equipment and machinery required

♦ Grant-writing experience helpful

Skills:

♦ Valid Driver’s License

♦ Must be familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher

♦ Must be able to communicate clearly and effectively

♦ Ability to educate novices and newcomers on the philosophy, methods and tasks of organic farming

♦ Ability to multi-task, delegate tasks and supervise others in a fast-paced, stressful environment

♦ Ability to work in collaborative setting, including community living/work-environment.

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:

♦ Flexible hours based on requirements of activities and projects

♦ Conditions where weather and/or other factors occasionally create unpleasant working conditions

♦ Work requires physical exertion and activities such as stooping, bending, lifting and pushing/pulling heavy equipment

♦ Some danger from accidents while using equipment and/or handling produce
