Village Gardens seeks a Community Organizer

Janus Youth Programs, Inc./Village Gardens seeks a Community Organizer to work 30 hours per week within an urban agriculture project based in North Portland and designed to bring a spirit of hope to the people within the community by growing and sharing healthy food, learning and teaching skills, and empowering community leadership. This position will recruit and partner with people who live in both the St. Johns Woods and New Columbia and Tamaracks public housing communities to (1) organize, implement and evaluate community-based health promotion programs and (2) promote resident leadership.

This position requires experience with and understanding of cultural traditions of low-income, urban African American, Latino and/or African Immigrant communities; experience demonstrating understanding of complex challenges and strengths present in poverty communities; experience with community organizing that promotes social justice; experience demonstrating understanding of adult and peer education; experience with customs of mainstream culture and power systems sufficient to assist low-income people in navigating these systems successfully; and experience facilitating and leading group decision making, goal setting, planning, project implementation and evaluation with diverse groups of people.

Beginning wage is $14.43/hour; excellent benefits.
