Slow Food USA seeks a Director of Programs

This is an opportunity to play an integral role in building the movement to catalyze and equip society to develop a good, clean and fair food system. Slow Food USA is at a pivotal moment in its history. With new leadership, we are becoming more directly engaged in advocacy and grassroots activism, and more oriented towards social justice work. The national Director of Programs is responsible for creating and directing Slow Food USA’s national programs and driving strategic and impactful change toward the organization’s new areas of focus. Slow Food USA runs its programs through our committed volunteer leadership in our local chapters—our programs are geared toward organizing and engaging networks for change. We are looking for someone who can leverage the collective power of individuals, and have an entrepreneurial approach to Slow Food USA’s programs. The Director of Programs reports to the President and is a member of the senior management team, which works to set strategic vision for Slow Food USA’s activities, its network, and its volunteer leadership.

The Director of Programs Will:

  • Duties and Responsibilities:
    • Direct National Programs including a national network of volunteer leadership, universities organizing for changed food system, farmers and consumer protecting the biodiversity of our food supply, an expanding national campaign strategy, and more. Direct 6-7 program staff
  • External Communications:
    • Serve as a spokesperson with external audiences for all program areas, including speaking opportunities, social media outlets, and media interviews
    • Work with the Director of Communications to properly position programs with members and supporters
  • Administration:
    • Develop and manage budgets
    • Steward relationships with funders and partners
    • Work with the Director of Development to assist with fundraising
  • Skills/Requirements:
    • Minimum education requirement: bachelor’s degree
    • Minimum 2 years in a program director role or equivalent, and 6 years professional work experience
    • Experience working in network engagement and/or advocacy on behalf of diverse constituents
    • Strategic planning experience, proven ability to create and implement new strategies, identify opportunities, and find solutions independently in an environment without extensive systems
    • Prior experience in a management role including direct supervision of multiple levels of staff and employees
    • Experience managing multiple program areas
    • Exceptional organizational and managerial skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously
    • The ability to effectively manage complex organizational change
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to master complex issues and convey information clearly
    • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship skills
  • Preferred:
    • Experience working in the food movement
    • Education- and/or advocacy-based program experience
    • Experience working in a member-based, non-profit organization
