Rogue Farm Corps seeks Interns

17 Feb

Location: Southern Oregon

Thanks for your interest in Rogue Farm Corps Farms Next Internship Program. Farms Next assists beginning farmers expand their knowledge and experience of sustainable agriculture by creating an exchange of knowledge and skills across a broad spectrum of small farms and ranches in our Rogue Valley community.  With over 10 participating farms, Farms Next offers interns a training curriculum, greatly expanding the opportunities for learning offered in a traditional farm internship program.  By completing the training curriculum, interns are exposed to the breadth of knowledge and skills necessary to manage a small farm of their own.

Rogue Farm Corps will assist in the recruitment and placement of interns on participating farms.  Final hiring decisions are up to the individual farmers.  Details of work expectations, living situations, stipends and other issues are worked out between individual farmers and interns.

You can expect to work hard and learn a lot.  Our community has a vast array of small farms, from market vegetable fields to grass fed livestock, seed growing to commercial dairying, poultry to CSA’s.  As a participant in Farms Next, you will be exposed to all of these diverse offerings in our Southern Oregon community.

Interns participating in the Farms Next program live and work full time on a host farm, learning in depth skills unique to the host farmers operation.  Two to three days per month, interns gather together for a tour and class on one of the participating farms, experiencing the diversity of agricultural operations in our community.  This benefits the interns by exposing them to numerous local farms and farmers and offering instruction in agricultural systems that might not be employed on their host farm.  And this benefits the farmers by sharing the responsibility of mentoring across the community.

In addition to the hands-on educational offerings, participants in the Farms Next program are offered a sense of community and social networking unavailable to many farm apprentice programs.

As a participant in the Farms Next, interns are expected to attend all of the classes, tours, and events, to engage in the enhancement and development of the program by reviewing classes and tours and participating in open and honest mid- and post-season interviews.  Interns are responsible for their own transportation; however, the Farms Next program coordinator will help facilitate carpooling.
