Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans and Acadiana is a nonprofit organization that is leading the fight against hunger in south Louisiana through food distribution, advocacy, education, and disaster response. Researches public policy at the local, state, and national level; develops policy resources and outreach information for
multiple audiences; supports and maintains advocacy coalitions throughout the food bank’s network of member agencies;
and works with legislators’ offices to develop and enhance their relationship with Second Harvest Food Bank and Feeding
America. Acts as a conduit to translate policy goals into action by connecting with advocacy groups, policymakers and
their staff, and other actors in the policy community. This position requires a high level of autonomy, initiative, and ability
to work with a wide range of people.
Performs research and develops policy analysis on hunger issues.
Develops relationships with state and national legislative and administrative offices.
Supports the work of the Louisiana Food Bank Association by providing policy expertise on statewide initiatives,
maintaining good relationships with state officials, and other duties as necessary.
Disseminates informational resources on the work and mission of Second Harvest Food Bank for legislative
offices on public policy priority areas and facilitates opportunities to engage policy makers.
Develops outreach materials and activities to develop grassroots advocacy.
Performs administrative assistance, policy analysis, and coordination of activities for the New Orleans Food
Policy Advisory Committee as needed.
Conducts field research to understand the local impacts of federal nutrition programs on the company’s agencies
Assists in obtaining federal legislative support for capital and operating appropriations or other opportunities
within the federal budget cycle.
Bachelor’s degree in a social science discipline preferred (e.g., public policy, political science, economics, sociology,
history) with research experience and analytical components. Experience developing and implementing policy advocacy
strategies; working with or building organizational coalitions to advocate for legislative change; working with governmental
officials and their staff.
Skills and Capabilities:
Passion for social justice issues with a working knowledge of federal and state safety net programs and the
Strong writing and editing skills and keen attention to detail; ability to produce clear, concise written material.
Ability to read and comprehend federal legislation and regulations and understand their impact on the company’s
agencies and clients.
Exceptional government relations, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
Ability to effectively communicate real world impacts of policy to a variety of audiences.
Understanding of basic statistical principles.
Ability to work with minimal supervision.
