Seedling Projects is offering a full-time (40 hrs/week) internship designed for a passionate young person wishing to gain experience at the intersection of food, sustainability, education and event planning. The intern will work closely with Seedling Projects founders Sarah Weiner, its Executive Director, and Dominic Phillips, its Executive Producer, on movement building, model creation and event production. This internship is a unique opportunity to engage with the community of food producers, chefs and leaders that have shaped the food movement over the last two decades and those that are leading the way to the future. The major projects the intern would focus on are the Good Food Awards, Good Food Month and DC Schools on the Move.
Seedling Projects, as an action arm of the food movement, works with a wide and international community to increase the popular demand for and access to good food.
Founders Sarah Weiner and Dominic Phillips bring a unique set of skills and communities to Seedling Projects. Sarah Weiner was the Producer of the Bristol Organic Food Festival, Coordinator for Alice Waters’ Art.Food.Hope dinners in DC, and Content Director for Slow Food Nation. Dominic Phillips was the Executive Producer of Slow Food Nation 2008 and is the owner of San Francisco’s premier boutique event planning company, Dominic Phillips Event Marketing.
About our projects:
- Good Food Awards: The Good Food Awards were created to celebrate the kind of food we all want to eat: tasty, authentic and responsibly produced. The annual award recognizes the people who produce good food and bring them the attention they need to grow and thrive through an Awards Ceremony hosted by Alice Waters in the iconic San Francisco Ferry Building, and various marketing opportunities.
- Good Food Month: An extension of the Good Food Awards, Good Food Month was created by a group of farmers, food producers, writers, grocers and passionate food lovers as a way to support the people who make great food. Building on the successful SF Beer Week model, the Good Food Month team is mobilizing a series of creative events that feature specialty food items in the following categories: Beer, Chocolate, Coffee, Cheese, Preserves, Pickles, Charcuterie and Immigrant Foods.
- DC Schools on the Move: In collaboration with teachers, school administrators, chefs, gardeners and non-profit organizations, DC Schools on the Move empowers DC schoolchildren to make healthy and sustainable food choices. To accomplish this, Seedling Projects has partnered with a DC charter school to create a farm, a dining hall program and a food and ecology curriculum wiki.
Intern Responsibilities Include:
- Outreach to food producers and collaborators
- Tracking and updating press materials
- Answering the phone
- Note taking/Meeting Minutes
- Manage FB & Twitter Accounts
- Manage website updates
- Grant and policy research
- Additional responsibilities as appropriate to experience and interests
- Strong interest in food from an environmental, social justice and cultural perspective
- Professional and thorough
- Excellent computer, written, verbal and organizational skills
- Self-starter able to execute responsibilities with minimal direction
- Flexibility and eagerness to lend a hand wherever it is most needed
- Ability to handle fast-paced environment
- Indesign and Photoshop knowledge a plus
