Vermont: The Vermont Food Venture Center seeks Operations Manager

The Vermont Food Venture Center (VFVC) is a newly constructed 15,000 sq foot shared use food processing and warehousing facility being developed by the Center for an Agricultural Economy (CAE) in Hardwick, Vermont. The mission of the VFVC is provide professional food processing opportunities to regional agricultural producers to increase the value of agricultural production, add living wage jobs, strengthen Vermont’s local food network, and further integrate the agricultural economy into the life of the Hardwick community. We do this by offering commercial kitchen rental, food processing technical assistance and business planning for start up and scale up. Through its many projects, including the VFVC the CAE is inspiring food security, healthy food, and rural community development interests in and around Hardwick, Vermont. The CAE supports the region in its effort to strengthen local economic and ecological health through a revitalized agricultural system.
About the Position

The VFVC seeks an energetic Operations Manager to oversee daily operation of food processing and storage areas, client training in food processing with emphasis on safe food production and proper equipment usage and sanitation. Other tasks include assisting clients with test batching, recipe scale-up, sourcing of ingredients and packaging and process improvement and making sure that the facility, tenants and clients are in compliance with all appropriate regulations.  The Operations Manager will coordinate with clients to facilitate receipt of product components prior to processing dates and to assist with distribution of products following processing.


  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment – enforces proper standards and procedures; complies with federal and state regulations
  • Maintains culinary equipment, instructs clients in equipment use, troubleshoots breakdowns, repairs, evaluates new equipment
  • Orients, trains, schedules and counsels VFVC clients
  • Identifies and resolves problems, completes audits, determines system improvements, reviews and implements accident plans
  • Tracks kitchen occupancy and equipment usage, estimates requirements, contributes information to annual budget process, analyzes budget variances and recommends corrective actions
  • Coordinates with clients for delivery of processing components and distribution of products

Skills and Requirements

  • Decision making, process improvement, verbal communication, food sanitation, safety management, equipment maintenance, management proficiency and quality focus
  • 2 years of similar experience highly preferred
  • Flexibility to work nights and weekends
  • Enthusiasm for development of value added products utilizing local agricultural products.
  • Vision for assisting entrepreneurs develop food businesses
  • Commitment to CAEs mission of local economic development through a revitalized agricultural system
