New York State: The Culinary Institute of America seeks two new Faculty Members

13 Jan

The Culinary Institute of America, the world’s premier culinary college, is seeking applicants for two full-time, year-round faculty
positions in Gastronomy and Food Studies to teach our students, who are aspiring professionals in the practice and management of culinary arts, and baking & pastry arts. The Culinary Institute is a Middle States accredited college offering both associates degree and bachelor’s degree programs.

Successful candidates must be able to teach Introduction to Gastronomy in addition to at least one of the following two courses: Food & Culture or Food, Wine & Agri(culture).

Introduction to Gastronomy requires a working knowledge of the history
and evolution of gastronomy, the sensory experience of the palate, and
the political, social and cultural context of food.

Food & Culture requires a theoretical knowledge of a social science as
it pertains to food and culture. This might include (but is not
limited to): anthropology, geography, political science, and
sociology. This class is offered as an option to fulfill the
core-course social-science degree requirement.

Food, Wine and Agri(culture) requires a strong background in food
systems on the micro- and macro-level to teach a core class of the
college that investigates, through an inter/multi-disciplinary
understanding, the interconnectedness of food, wine, agriculture and
culture. Comparative knowledge a plus. The classroom component of this
course prepares the students for an intensive experiential trip for
approximately three weeks to such locations as Italy, Spain, France,
China, California or the U.S. Pacific Northwest. This position
specifically seeks a person to assist in curricular development, lead
a team-taught course and be willing to periodically travel with
students.

Candidates applying for either of these positions must have earned, at
minimum, a master’s degree in a related field (PhD preferred) and have
prior college teaching experience (or equivalent). This position
centers on an intensive teaching load and includes student advising,
campus committees and ongoing contribution to his/her field of
research.

We will begin reviewing applications on January 15, 2011 and continue
until the positions are filled. Please send your cover letter and C.V.
to: H_Woods@culinary.edu and please be certain to include position
reference #2471.

The CIA, which is located in New York’s Hudson Valley, offers a
generous benefits package, along with a competitive salary to be
negotiated and commensurate with experience.
