Massachusetts: Wright-Locke Farm seeks Market Farm Manager

3 Mar
Wright-Locke Farm in Winchester, MA is a 300-year-old historic farm that has recently been purchased by the Town of Winchester for preservation.  The farm is Certified Organic and for the last 20+ years has been planted in a successful PYO raspberry crop.  The Wright-Locke Conservancy Board, which operates the farm under a Mangement Agreement with the Town of Winchester, plans to expand our farm in 2011 by growing a wider variety of market vegetables on our approximate 3 + acres.  Our produce will be sold as PYO, at our local farmer’s market and through local area restaurants.

We are hiring a Market Farm Manager for the 2011 season.  This is a 22-week, seasonal position beginning May 1 and extending to the end of September. We seek a candidate with one to two years small scale farming experience who is enthusiastic about farming and interested in running all aspects of a small, diverse vegetable operation.  Responsibilities include assisting with crop planning and production, field preparation and tillage, hand and tractor cultivation and weeding, harvesting and distribution.  Besides having a passion for sustainable farming, the successful candidate must be comfortable managing hourly staff (local high school students) and volunteers of all ages. The Market Farm Manager should enjoy interacting with the public while being up for the challenge of physically demanding tasks, work hours, and pace of the farm season.  We seek a flexible, responsible individual who has a great sense of humor and can work well both independently and as part of a team.

Compensation includes a stipend of $300 week. Housing is potentially available in the on-site historic farmhouse for the appropriate person.. Experience of one to two seasons at a production farm is preferred.
