Job Summary
The Farm Youth Initiative (FYI) teaches urban youth about the importance of making healthy food choices through a nutrition class and a field trip to Clagett Farm. Classes focus on basic nutrition themes centered around a hands-on opportunity to participate in vegetable growing, cultivating, harvesting and healthy snack preparation.

Basic Function
Co-lead and facilitate nutrition lessons at community organizations throughout
the Washington, DC metro area and at the children’s garden at Clagett Farm in
Upper Marlboro, MD

Major Responsibilities/Activities
·         Co-teach nutrition/garden classes at Kids Cafe summer program sites
and at Clagett Farm including healthy snack preparation at each class
·         Assist with all activities during the Clagett Farm field trip which
may include garden maintenance, hands-on garden instruction and organizing youth
·         Shop for and process ingredients for healthy snacks
·         Conduct pre- and post- evaluations of project and track results
·         Development of educational aids and teaching materials, as needed
·         Maintain a log of accomplishments throughout internship
·         Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
·         Education background and/or experience working with at-risk youth
·         Academic background and/or practical application experience in
nutrition/dietetics

·         Experience/understanding of gardening or farming programs in a diverse
working environment

·         Physical capacity to work outside in a variety of weather conditions
·         Ability to work independently and as part of a team and ability to
multitask and prioritize
·         Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
·         Must possess a current valid driver’s license

Hours/Salary
·         Summer 2011 – 12 weeks full-time (40 hours/week)
·         $12.00/hr

Work Environment
·         Interest in and ability to work outside in a variety of weather
conditions, especially hot temperatures
·         Willingness to drive CAFB cars to sites in metro area Washington, DC
and Clagett Farm
