Massachusetts: Farm and Garden Camp seeks Instructors

Farm and Garden Camp will include activities in the Children’s Garden, hands-on animal care and productive farm work, an intentional focus on growing the food that we eat, a farm stand for families, and preparing, sharing and celebrating at the weekly Farm Feast.  Located on the Hampshire College Campus, the Farm Center serves as a vibrant public resource to connect to our food and explore the rich history of agriculture in the Pioneer Valley.  Farm and Garden Camp is a program of The Farm Education Collaborative (TFEC).  TFEC designs and delivers authentic agricultural experiences that nurture the connections between families and food in the Pioneer Valley. Farm and Garden Camp Instructors are supervised by the Camp Directors.  Instructors are responsible for guiding and supporting children ages 4-10 through daily farm and garden activities and transitions during each 5-day camp session between July 11 and August 19.  Mandatory staff training will occur July 5th through 8th at the Hampshire College Farm Center.

Camp Instructors need experience working with and a genuine love for children, a creative spirit, the ability to be flexible when needed, and lots of patience.  We expect your first priority at camp to be identifying and meeting the diverse and evolving needs of our campers. The main focus of the position is to support, engage, challenge, and enjoy the children.

Instructors will be responsible for:

  • Supervising and leading a group of campers
  • Guiding and serving as a role model for CIT staff
  • Teaching lessons on gardening, agricultural crafts, cooking, and animal care
  • Supervising campers during arrival, meal times and leading camper choice time
  • Actively engaging in all camp activities
  • Assisting with other camp activities as needed, including daily set-up and clean-up
  • Attending morning staff meetings with Director(s)

Camp Instructors are expected to have:

  • Experience working with children, preferably in a day camp setting
  • Desire and/or experience working with children in farm and garden settings
  • Ability to plan and conduct children’s activities
  • Ability to work both as a team player and independently
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Current certification in standard first aid and CPR
  • Experience with crafts, cooking, farm animals, and/or gardening

Rate: $10/hour, 37 hours/week
