Start date: mid-April
End date: early August (3 wk. minimum stay)
Nettles Farm on Lummi Island seeks interns for the 2011 season. Work will be at 2 sites on the island; the 2.5 acre Nettles Farm and 3 acres at Three Pheasants Farm, five minutes from Nettles. Both are mixed vegetable operations, growing a wide variety of produce. Additionally, Nettles has a small orchard and variety of berries. Produce supplies the Willows Inn restaurant, recently named “one of ten restaurants worth a plane ride in 2011” by the New York Times. Additionally, farm produce is sold at the weekly island farmers’ market.
Our intern will be expected to help with the day-to-day responsibilities on the farm. These include: weeding beds; harvesting, washing, and packing produce; feeding animals; collecting and washing eggs; working at the farmers’ market booth; garden care and maintenance, greenhouse work, etc. Learning opportunities include all aspects of vegetable production (weeding, transplanting, harvesting, bed prep.), animal husbandry, and opportunities to participate in the production of value-added products. Interns work alongside the three farmers, providing ample opportunity for questions/discussion.
Compensation: Room & Board = private room in our farm house, fresh veggies and eggs from farm, and all the espresso you can drink!
No experience necessary, minimum three-week stay, 30/hrs. work per week. We’re looking for hard-workers with positive attitudes! Please send a resume and a brief description of why you’re interested in a farming internship to the farm manager: Anna McHugh firstname.lastname@example.org.
