Chiang Mai, Thailand: Junior Seed Steward
Dokmai Garden is situated in Chiang Mai in northern Thailand. It is a private botanical garden with over 980 tropical plant species, including a monsoon woodland, fruit section, vegetable section, truffle dog, water buffalo, wild boar, fish pond, chicken, ducks, silver pheasants and guineafowl. The aim of Dokmai Garden is to impart knowledge about tropical plants and wildlife found in the Chiang Mai province, either in the national parks, in the farmlands, in the markets or in the gardens. We offer a Tropical Gardening School as well as tours and we welcome drop-in visitors.
We currently look for somebody who could set up a seed collection in collaboration with our senior researcher. The conditions in a tropical monsoon climate are different from the temperate regions. Initially we wish to focus on edible plants, including vegetables. Our collection encompass in total 350 edible plant species, and we should like to create a seed bank as a back-up, and as a source of germplasm for other farms and home gardeners. The task will include collections and preservation of seeds from plants on the property, participation in expeditions to jungles and remote villages and farms to obtain more seeds, and the establishment of contacts with other germplasm banks for seed exchange. In a second step we wish to launch an orchid seed germination program, producing genetic diversity by pollinating laboratory orchid mericlones (only native species). The aim is a future contribution to the restoration of the nearby national parks. The junior seed steward is expected to do some teaching.
A graduate in botany, horticulture, forestry or agriculture.
Previous experience from working in the tropics and/or previous experience from seed banks and/or knowledge of Thai or any other Asian language are strong merits.
Documented pedagogic skills are important.
The position will start as a ten weeks volunteer position (a working permit and VISA is needed for that) with the possibility of future employment.
