Approximately 20% of farmers markets accept SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) nationwide. In an effort to increase that number, and connect low-income communities with healthy local food, Mass Farmers Markets has partnered with both national and local organizations to purchase Point of Sales (POS) devices in order to accept SNAP payments at farmers markets. In partnership with Wholesome Wave, we have also implemented a matching system, whereby SNAP recipients can deduct up to $10 from their SNAP account, and receive a total of $20 to spend at market once per market.
-Operating the EBT Terminal at market. This includes being present at market each week 30 minutes before it opening, and at least 30 minutes after closing to collect SNAP and Credit\Debit tokens from the farmers and vendors.
-Informing SNAP recipients, farmers and vendors, and market managers about SNAP acceptance and redemption procedures at market, and keeping them updated on the program.
-Maintaining a friendly and professional manner while interacting with all parties involved.
-Handing out tokens to SNAP recipients as well as Credit\Debit card user to be used at market.
-Retrieving tokens from vendors at the close of each market day.
-tracking information from SNAP recipients to determine how they heard about the SNAP acceptance program and other details.
-Collaborating with other organizations to utilize effective outreach methods for alerting the community about SNAP acceptance at farmers markets.
-Entering transaction data for SNAP recipients, as well as credit and debit card payments.
