NYC: GrowNYC seeks Youthmarket Manager/Driver

20 Apr
Program Information: Youthmarket is a program of GrowNYC (formerly the Council on the Environment of New York City), a hands-
on non-profit that has been improving New York City’s environment since 1970. GrowNYC oversees the largest farmers market program
in the country, Greenmarket, which operates 50 farmers markets throughout NYC. Youthmarket’s purpose is to fight the epidemic of diet-
related disease while aiding Greenmarket by bringing additional revenue to small- and medium-sized farms. Youthmarket carries out this
mission through a network of youth-run urban farm stands. By training and employing young people and working in collaboration with
the communities we serve, Youthmarket expands the reach of local fresh fruits and vegetables while limiting the cost to farmers. At the
same time, participating youth gain hands-on experience running a small business and become ambassadors of good eating and healthy
food to their families, friends, and schools.
Youthmarket Manager/Driver Position: GrowNYC seeks a highly organized, self-motivated, outgoing early-riser to distribute produce
and oversee market operations for a network of thirteen weekly youth- run farm stands throughout NYC and make produce deliveries for
the Youthmarket Distribution Network. The Youthmarket Manager/Driver will collect and deliver produce inventory, set up and take
down farm stands, and oversee merchandising and sales. At the close of each day, the Youthmarket Manager/Driver will be required to
fill out daily inventory reports to be delivered to the Program Coordinator. He or she will also be required to deliver all market revenue,
organized and bundled, to the Program Coordinator. Payments to certain farmers will be delivered by the Youthmarket Manager/Driver.
Additionally, the Youthmarket Manager/Driver will supervise youth and senior market staff and be responsible for educating them about
healthy eating, informing them about the product, and providing on-the-job training in areas of merchandising and customer service. The
Youthmarket Manager/Driver will also make produce deliveries to other projects or customers in the Youthmarket Distribution Network,
such as senior centers, restaurants, and other institutions. The Youthmarket Manager/Driver will function as Youthmarket’s field
representative to program participants and partner organizations and must have the ability to work well with a wide variety of individuals,
including youth and seniors. Applicants should have an interest in food, knowledge about food systems, and a desire to increase food-
access in NYC’s low-income communities. The position requires excellent communications skills, a professional demeanor, high physical
energy, and experience working with young people and/or seniors. Applicants must be capable of working independently, with minimal
supervision. The Youthmarket Manager/Driver will be required to work weekends and early mornings and must have a valid drivers
license in good standing, preferably with experience driving trucks in NYC. The Youthmarket Manager/Driver will be required to attend a
day of Greenmarket manager training on May 17 and 19 (subject to change).
Physical Requirements: The Youthmarket Manager/Driver position requires working outdoors in all weather conditions, standing and
walking for extended periods, carrying heavy and bulky items on a daily basis, and working early morning hours.
Youthmarket Distribution Manager/Driver Responsibilities:
Below is a list of some, but not all, of the Youthmarket Manager/Driver duties:
• Operate a 10’ box truck on NYC surface roads and highways, collect produce and deliver it to Youthmarket distribution sites;
• Maintain equipment and materials necessary to daily market operations, including price signs, tents, tables, and scales;

• Function as GrowNYC and Youthmarket’s representative to partner organizations and their staff;
• Be knowledgeable about origins and uses of products at market; be able to communicate that knowledge to youth and customers.
