Job Description

Lakewood Health System (LHS) in Staples, Minnesota will address local economic and human development through the creation and implementation of a long-term local food purchasing program.  The local food system planning intern will be responsible for working with local farmers and LHS officials to create an implementable plan that addresses costs, prices, logistics and transportation, and incorporation of local products into LHS menu planning.

Job Duties

  • Contact and identify local farmers, growers, and associations with whom to work and coordinate growing schedules to determine what products will be available for LHS to use
  • Contact other facilities that are currently using locally grown products – how have they accomplished this, get buy in from staff, staffing needs for working with local products
  • Establish a pricing scheme that is both fair to farmers and affordable to LHS
  • Establish a functional process that involves: product ordering, delivery, storage, transportation, and food preparation
  • Check in to availability of products – what is available at different times of the year
  • Possibility of pre-ordering produce
  • Promoting/marketing of local foods within LHS and in community
  • For pilot program – writing the steps and process – putting it all together
  • If nutritional analysis program is available – enter recipes into program
  • Lead in-service for staff – train staff about program: what it is, why we are doing it. Determine cooking techniques/training opportunities for staff.
  • Green initiative (if fits with program) – recycling/composting of food waste, more recycling throughout system, reusable containers, cups, etc.

  • Graduate student
  • Interest in local and sustainable agriculture
  • Experience or interest in economic and community development
  • Experience or understanding of small-scale farming
  • Food service experience
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication and inter-personal skills
  • Professional and dependable work ethic
  • Quick and creative thinker
  • Self starter; able to work independently
