Minnesota: Minneapolis Farmers Market seeks two EBT Program Interns

Background Information

Two summer internships are available with the Central Minnesota Vegetable Growers Association (CMVGA) to provide support for the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) and Market Bucks program at the Minneapolis Farmers Market (Lyndale Avenue location).   The EBT program allows individuals to utilize their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, at the market to purchase eligible items including fresh fruits and vegetables.  The Market Bucks program is a complementary initiative to provide matching funds for EBT customers in order to increase their purchasing power.

Position Description

The EBT Program Intern is responsible for providing support for the ongoing implementation of the EBT and Market Bucks program throughout the 2011 market season.  Responsibilities will include:

  • ·     Assist EBT Coordinator in setting up and tearing down the EBT booth on market days (Thurs – Sun)
  • ·     Distribute EBT and Market Bucks informational materials to customers at the EBT booth on market days (Thurs – Sun)
  • ·     Respond to EBT and Market Bucks related questions posed by customers and vendors
  • ·     Monitor vendor booths throughout the market to ensure proper display of EBT/Market Bucks signage
  • ·     Provide customer service to EBT users and vendors; explain appropriate uses of tokens and Market Bucks
  • ·     Maintain open lines of communication with vendors so that they can communicate any concerns regarding the program
  • ·     Assist EBT Coordinator in administrative functions of the EBT program as appropriate (may include assisting with token and Market Bucks distribution and collection, data tracking and reporting
  • ·     Other EBT and Market Bucks related duties, as assigned

Preferred Knowledge and Skills

  • ·     Knowledge, experience, or interest related to food access issues, agriculture, local food systems, public health, or a related field
  • ·     Strong customer service skills and experience
  • ·     Experience working with community residents, especially low-income populations and communities of color
  • ·     Knowledge and familiarity with diverse cultures, beliefs and lifestyles
  • ·     Ability to work in an environment which requires flexibility, responsiveness, and multi-tasking
  • ·     Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Salary and Conditions:

  • ·     Hourly Wage = $10.00/hr
  • ·     Work Schedule – The EBT program is offered at the market Thursdays (8:30am – 12:30pm), Fridays (8:30am – 12:30pm), Saturdays (6:30am – 1:30pm), and Sundays (6:30am – 1:30pm).  Interns must commit to a regular schedule for the 28 week market season (mid-May through mid-November), however the hours worked per week is negotiable, please inquire for specific scheduling options.
