Department/Program Overview: North Carolina A&T State University is an 1890 land-grant university located in Greensboro. – N.C The Cooperative Extension Program is a campus-based department in the School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences. Cooperative Extension is responsible for providing educational information, programming and technical assistance to limited-resource audiences in four program areas: Agriculture and Natural Resources, Family and Consumer Sciences, Community and Economic Development, and 4-H and Youth Development. Cooperative Extension staff is dedicated to the development of programs that impact the lives of North Carolina citizens. Programs provided by Cooperative Extension are offered in partnership with North Carolina State University and the state’s 101 Cooperative Extension Centers.
Location: Campus, North Carolina A&T State University
Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Develop educational programming that assists both established agricultural producers and beginning farmers in developing market-driven, systems-integrated, and sustainable specialty crop and/or alternative enterprises that are appropriate for community-based food systems; Develop proposals and secure extramural funding for Extension horticultural programs that address the needs and learning behaviors of beginning, small-scale, and limited resource growers; Assist colleagues from affiliated institutions and public agencies, local government, community-based agencies and concerned individuals in the development of additional educational programming such as food safety and community gardening that address food safety and security issues in low-income communities; Participate in training programs for Extension field faculty and community stakeholders that focus on sustainable agriculture, specialty crops (including organic and nursery enterpr
ises) and food security and safety issues; Integrate appropriate components of the State Extension Long Range Plan into horticultural programming efforts and assists in planning and developing effective Cooperative Extension Programs at the local level; Assist field faculty and staff with respect to the planning and implementation of onsite educational demonstrations related to horticultural production and environmental stewardship; Function as a cooperative member of an interdisciplinary team that seeks to create integrative programs that meet the needs of limited-resource and society-disadvantaged audiences; Establish and maintain strategic partnerships with professional peers, organizations, institutions, and other agencies to produce innovative techniques that encourage users to adopt and/or implement system approaches for solving problems.
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have expertise in vegetable production/marketing systems and demonstrated skills in providing on-farm technical support. The candidate must be effective in conveying information in written and oral forms for limited-resource audiences as well as other stakeholders. Production agriculture experience and/or college level coursework related to specialty crops, vegetable crops. Entomology, weed science, plant pathogens, and basic agricultural engineering are desirable.
Education: An earned doctorate degree in either horticulture or a closely related field is required.
