Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT), a non-profit in Providence RI that helps people grow food through innovative urban agriculture programs, is seeking enthusiastic, qualified candidates for an Americorps VISTA position as the City-Wide and Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator. For 30 years, SCLT’s community gardens, urban agriculture workshops and education programs, and urban farms have helped to transform the urban landscape of Providence, RI into a productive and vibrant center for community-based food production.
The City-Wide and Neighborhood Outreach Coordinator VISTA member will assist SCLT’s Outreach Director with web and print communications, event and workshop planning, and community-based urban agriculture education. The VISTA member will coordinate and edit SCLT’s print newsletter (twice a year), e-newsletter (monthly), the organization’s website, SCLT’s Plant Providence workshop initiative, and press outreach for events and announcements. The VISTA member will also be responsible for developing content for the Urban Agriculture Resource Center, an online guide to growing food in urban soils. The VISTA member will create videos, photo slideshows, articles, and other materials on topics such as water conservation, urban soil improvement, seed starting, and integrated pest management. Finally, the VISTA member will assist SCLT staff with neighborhood-based outreach, engaging with neighborhood families through door-to-door contact, flyering, and community events.
Ideal candidates will have a bachelor’s degree in any subject and experience in writing, editing, community organizing, urban agriculture, education, and/or web design. An interest in environmental sustainability, food production and access, and neighborhood improvement is essential. Proficiency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
