Italy: Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School seeks Gardening Intern

21 May

The Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School, located in central Sicily, is looking for a gardening intern to join their team.  The school is found on the Regaleali estate, also home to the internationally-known Tasca d’Almerita winery, a bountiful and beautiful property that sources nearly all its own food from within it’s boundaries.  Open to students from March until November, the school is led by Chef Fabrizia Lanza, known both for her cooking and her food and culture writing, and greets hundreds of students from all over the world.

The gardens at the Anna Tasca Lanza Cooking School include a vegetable garden, a rose garden, and a fruit orchard, specializing on both typical local produce as well as some endangered or more ancient goods.  We are looking for two experienced people to come to the school for two to three months, one person somewhere between the February to May 2012 timeline and another somewhere between September and November 2012.  Duties will include weeding, pruning both roses and fruit trees, feeding the plants, seeding the vegetables, harvesting fruits and vegetables, among other responsibilities for which an ideal candidate must be flexible.  The gardening intern will also help in the kitchen—not necessarily with the cooking, but definitely with the cleaning and preserving of the goods harvested from the garden.  An enjoyment of cooking and good food is a plus. The ability to lift upwards of 50 lbs and be outside doing this type of labor is a must, and a basic command of the Italian language (at least in gardening terms) is ideal, as you will be working side-by-side with our Sicilian gardener.

Our gardening internship is unpaid, though room and board will be completely covered—it will be the candidate’s responsibility to pay for airfare and travel.  This is a great opportunity to do what you love to do while surrounded by the beautiful Sicilian countryside, and to learn more about local produce and gardening techniques.  To apply, please send a cover letter and resume (please make sure to state your level of gardening knowledge/experience in your letter if not reflected on your resume) to  Please visit to find out more about our school.
