Massachusetts: New Lands Farm seeks Marketing Intern – West Springfield

New Lands Farm, a project of Lutheran Social Services (LSS), seeks a Marketing Intern to assist an exciting new project which engages recently resettled refugees in growing food for their families and the community in Greater Springfield, MA.  LSS is a non-profit, refugee resettlement organization that provides refugees with the support and guidance needed to achieve economic self-sufficiency, community integration and a better future. 

About the Position

The New Lands Farm Marketing Intern will conduct hands-on assistance to refugee farmers wishing to sell their fresh vegetables grown at our 10 acre farm site in West Springfield and additional garden sites.  Refugee farmers represent diverse backgrounds and skills.  The Marketing Intern will be working directly with New Lands Farm staff to offer one-on-one marketing assistance and increase refugee farmer product sales.  This is a unique opportunity to engage in a meaningful project and promote local food.  Interns will have the ability to get involved in a diversity of activities associated with the project, as well as the opportunity to attend trainings and access land for personal gardening/farming. The position is unpaid for 20 hours/week, June thru August.

Responsibilities:

The Marketing Intern will support the Program Coordinator and refugee famers/gardeners by assisting with the following:

    • Identifying and/or developing new market opportunities for the refugee farmers
    • Interacting with farmers’ market managers, wholesale purchasers and retail customers
    • Attending weekly farmers’ markets
    • Assisting with deliveries of products
    • Tracking customers’ orders, farmers’ sales, and cash flow
    • Contributing to New Lands Farm website and social media outlets
    • Documenting project and farmers’ season through photos, video and/or written word
    • Training refugee farmers on marketing techniques

Qualifications:

    • Demonstrate strong background in growing food, promoting local agriculture
    • Previous farm marketing experience a plus
    • Comfortable interacting with clients from diverse cultural backgrounds
    • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and lift 50 pounds
    • Driver’s license necessary and personal vehicle preferred
    • Team player who can work independently as needed
    • Strong record keeping, organization and computer skills
    • Interest and experience with social media and other promotion/marketing tools
