Organic Gardening Internship at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Greater Pittsburgh (South Hills branch) May thru August 2011
Do you want to learn the basics of organic gardening in a fun, relaxed environment?
Learn organic methods of soil preparation, plant nutrition and maintenance, natural weed and pest control, companion planting, harvesting techniques and composting. Learn how to create a thriving and abundant garden while increasing the health and fertility of your soil without the use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
The internship would involve working 10-15 hours/week in the JCC’s Summer Garden Program, now in its 2nd year, which is part of the JCC’s Summer Day Camp Program for children ages 2-16 years old. The garden intern would assist Hal Kaufman, Camp Naturalist and a seasoned organic gardener and environmental educator in planting and maintaining the 480 square foot garden. Duties would include some digging, hoeing and light to moderate labor.
The intern would also be working in the garden with children attending the camp and would be required to obtain the following clearances; Act 34 (Background Check), Act 151 (Child Abuse) and FBI Clearance. More info on how to obtain these clearances is available on the PA Dept. of Education website.
This is an unpaid internship; however, there would be a small stipend available at the end of the summer upon successful completion of the internship. The intern would receive a share of the weekly garden harvest and a free JCC membership good thru the fall of 2011.
