California: People’s Grocery seeks Community Engagement Coordinator

11 Jun

Start Date: July 1st, 2011

People’s Grocery is a health and wealth organization – our mission is to improve the health and economy of West Oakland through the local food system. Through programs, advocacy, and leadership development, we actively pursue “food justice,” the idea that access to healthy foods is a human right.

The Community Engagement Coordinator (CEC) is primarily responsible for creating and maintaining pathways for resident engagement in People’s Grocery’s programs. The CEC is responsible for supporting all three organizational goals: System Changes in the Food Economy, Movement Building, and Health through Healthy Foods. We are looking for someone deeply grounded in local grassroots activism, who can keep our programs resident-driven and relevant; someone who can connect those deeply resident-driven programs to advocacy efforts; someone who can refine our ability to create change as a food justice organization. The CEC reports to the Program Director, and will share responsibility for program success with the Garden Manager.

Performance Requirements:

Primary Responsibility: Resident Engagement and Organizing (70%)

  • Coordinate and organize meaningful engagement activities with West Oakland residents.
    • Facilitate activities at our West Oakland sites, especially as related to the California Hotel (includes garden based events/workshops, tours of our gardens, special events and dinner parties). The CEC will coordinate all activities with the Garden Manager.
    • Co-facilitate resident leadership activities and organizing strategies.
  • Encourage and support access to healthy food, especially through planning outreach strategies and ongoing activities for GRUB Box customers (activities can include Health And Nutrition DemonstrationS (HANDS), community cooking events, connection to applicable social services, and other activities).
  • Coordinate resident participation in campaigns and institutional partnerships, including issue identification, research, development of engagement strategies, and coordinating advocacy efforts.
  • All administrative duties related to this responsibility, including documentation, outcome tracking, workplan development, budget management, etc.

Secondary Responsibility: Manage and coordinate overall movement building activities (30%)

  • Develop projects/activities, along with communications and outreach strategies for those activities
  • Support and coordinate outreach/movement building between all People’s Grocery’s programs, focusing attention on our anti-oppression program and Growing Justice Institute.
  • Coordinate organizational participation with allied organizations, including meeting attendance at relevant community gatherings and calendar maintenance of community events, especially as related to the California Hotel and City Slicker Farms.
  • All administrative duties related to this responsibility, including documentation, outcome tracking, workplan development, budget management, etc.

  • Minimum education requirement: bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
  • Experience organizing local communities of color and low-income communities
  • Proven ability to create and implement new strategies, identify opportunities, and find solutions independently in an environment without extensive systems
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, and maintain excellent administrative documentation and systems
  • The ability to effectively manage complex organizational change
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to master complex issues and convey information clearly
  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship skills
