California: People’s Grocery seeks Program Assistant

People’s Grocery is a health and wealth organization – our mission is to improve the health and economy of West Oakland through the local food system. Through programs, advocacy, and leadership development, we actively pursue “food justice,” the idea that access to healthy foods is a human right.

The Program Assistant is primarily responsible for organizing and maintaining the documentation and communications of the Program Team and all of People’s Grocery’s programs. This position will support all three of the organization’s goals: encouraging community health through healthy foods, movement building, and systemic change. We are looking for someone committed to food justice to support a fast-moving team.

Performance Requirements:

Primary Responsibility: Organizing/Maintaining Program Team Documentation (70%)

  • Assist Program Director with:
    • Meeting preparation, meeting notes, organizing program team meetings, following up on meeting tasks
    • Maintaining organizational and planning documents
  • Special Event/Project Support
    • Managing budgets and tasks for program events, managing special projects as necessary
  • Maintaining Program Documentation
    • Newsletter, website updates (calendar, blog, etc), internal communication
    • Contacts database

Secondary Responsibility: Office Administration (30%)

  • Managing front desk operations and volunteer assignments
  • Development support (database, thank you letters, etc.)
  • Other office administration duties as needed


  • Competency in basic software applications, especially database software
  • Proven ability to create and implement new strategies, identify opportunities, and find solutions independently in an environment without extensive systems
  • Exceptional organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, and maintain excellent administrative documentation and systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to master complex issues and convey information clearly
  • Strong interpersonal communication and relationship skills


    • Experience working in low-income communities and communities of color

Title: Program Assistant, People’s Grocery

Classification: Part Time Non-Exempt Employee (20 hours/week)

Compensation: $13/hr, some benefits

Location: Oakland, CA
