Seed Savers Exchange is currently seeking a Horticultural Assistant to work with curatorial staff on all field and lab projects supporting the maintenance of our heirloom and open-pollinated corn collection. Work will be performed both outside in the field and inside in the seed lab and will include project tracking and documentation. This position is located at Heritage Farm in Decorah, IA. This is a 40 hour/week position, scheduled to run from early July through December.
Job responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
-Performing corn hand-pollinations
-Tracking all hand-pollination lots from harvest through packaging
-Phenotypic characterization of plants and seeds in the field and lab
-Data collection and record keeping
-Digital scanning of specimens and field photography
-Maintaining corn plots
-A Bachelor’s degree in horticulture or related field or equivalent years demonstrated practical work experience in horticulture.
-Hands-on experience with plants; experience with vegetable crops is preferred
-Experience with data collection and record keeping
-Working knowledge of plant anatomy, physiology, and taxonomy
-Ability to perform field work in wide ranging weather conditions
-Applicants must have a valid driver’s license
