Missouri: MU Extension seeks Farm to School/School Garden Coordinator

MU Extension is an academic division consisting of approximately 1500+ faculty and staff throughout the state within 22+ departments including Cooperative Extension and Continuing Education. For more information about Extension, visit http://extension.missouri.edu/.

This position works within the Kansas City area in the MU Extension Nutrition Program, implementing activities associated with the Health Care Foundation of Greater Kansas City Food from the Farm and Early Sprouts grant-funded programs. This is a 1-year grant-funded position.

Characteristic Duties
Coordinate the selection, purchase, and delivery of local produce for educational fruit and vegetable classroom lessons for the Food from the Farm kindergarten program. In addition, coordinate the selection, purchase, and delivery of food items for weekly cooking activities and weekly family recipe kits for the Early Sprouts pre-kindergarten program.

Support teachers in implementing the programs, including communicating regularly with teachers, encouraging healthy school food policies and environmental change. Ensure knowledge of farm-to-school and gardening curricula is maintained and teachers’ questions are answered based on approved curricula and research-based knowledge.

Coordinate and schedule seasonal farm trips and assist with selecting and providing educational farm activities to ensure a positive learning environment.

Provide teacher trainings and facilitate program evaluation, including evaluating students and ensuring that parent and teacher evaluation materials are completed.

Provide assistance with planting and maintenance of raised bed school gardens and coordinate garden volunteers, ensuring learning activities and educational opportunities are provided to teachers and students.

Attend school open house events to promote the program to parents, including providing educational information and offering parent activities at schools to engage parents in learning.

Conduct all activities in accordance with the Civil Rights Acts, Title IX, Rehabilitation, Americans with Disabilities Act and local, state and region affirmative action plans.

As with all positions, involvement with other duties and responsibilities may be expected in order to support the mission and purpose of MU Extension.

Salary
$11.80-13.30

Shift
8-5 with some nights and weekends possible

Minimum Qualifications
Associate Degree or sixty (60) hours college credit, with an emphasis in Nutrition, Education, Human Development, Social Work, Consumer & Family Sciences, Public Health, or Communication.  Relevant work experience in Nutrition, Education, Human Development, Social Work, Consumer & Family Sciences, Public Health, or Communication can be substituted at a rate of one (1) year experience is equivalent to five (5) college credits – up to a maximum of ten (10) years.  An additional  nine (9)-ten (10) college credits will be required.

Preferred Qualifications
Professional and positive interpersonal skills necessary.

Ability to travel is required.

Knowledge and passion about proper nutrition.

Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision.

Experience working with youth in an educational setting and/or agricultural knowledge and experience.
