Position Dates:  Varied.  Vista is 1 year service, Sept 1ststart.  Americorps is 10.5 months, Sept 1 or Oct 1 start.

Primary Responsibilities

GRuB’s Kitchen Garden Project (KGP) connects low-income people to resources they need to grow fresh food.  We work alongside volunteers and new gardeners to construct dozens of backyard and community gardens each year.  Through mentoring, workshops, and neighborhood organizing, we improve food security, self-reliance, and overall health of low-income people. The AmeriCorps member will work with college interns, volunteers, and youth involved in our employment program to ensure that 80 backyard gardens and 5 institutional gardens are built in Thurston and Mason counties over this next year.

Responsibilities will include:

v  Overall managing of backyard garden construction including site visit and building calendar

v  Conducting pre and post season site visits and builds with gardeners

v  Organizing donations and community events

v  Coordinating garden mentors and other resources for new gardeners

v  Planning and leading community workshops

v  Executing administrative tasks including answering phones, data entry, and seasonal communications

v  Recruiting/training/mentoring of KGP team members (including student interns, volunteers, and youth)

Qualifications for Americorps positions:

  • 25 years old or younger, high school equivalency*
  • Mature, outgoing, comfortable working in a group
  • Strong experience & rapport with youth
  • Strong communication, teaching, & facilitation skills
  • Positive attitude, works well with others
  • Gardening/farming experience preferred
  • Computer literate (MS Office Suite)
  • Spanish or Vietnamese language proficiency a plus
