Washington State: GRuB seeks two Americorps VISTA Associates

Position Title VISTA GRuB in the Schools Project Assistant

Hours:  40 hours/week, 9am – 5:30pm; Monday-Friday with some weekends and evenings as needed

Primary Responsibilities

This Vista member will support the launch of the new “GRuB in the Schools” pilot project as well as strategic behind-the-scenes support to make this work replicable in new sites.  This person will work on key capacity building and evaluation systems related to program activities including sustainable farming, community education, and volunteer coordination. In addition, this person will play a role in integrating the new pilot into our Kitchen Garden Project (free garden building for low-income families) and Education Program (field trips on the farm for pre-K through Middle School students).

Major responsibilities include:

Documenting pilot project and completing a final narrative to capture our process for others to use

Supporting integration of our GRuB in the Schools program into our Kitchen Garden Project and Education Program for Elementary & Middle School aged youth

Provide logistical support of the larger initiative including volunteer coordination, forging new school district partnerships, pilot campaign work details and coordinating community outreach/fundraising events.

Supporting Pilot Program Replication including coordinating with GRuB staff and GRuB youth involvement in pilot evaluation, and research on program modifications needed for future replication.

Position TitleVISTA Neighborhood Food Solutions Coordinator

Hours:  40 hours/week, 9am – 5pm; Monday – Friday with additional evening and weekend hours

Primary Responsibilities

This VISTA position will work with our Kitchen Garden Project Coordinator to create neighborhood-based garden and education programming that goes well beyond our existing free backyard garden and community gardening workshop series. This person will help create empowering volunteer opportunities, organize neighborhood gatherings, facilitate neighbor-to-neighbor garden mentorship, support leadership training opportunities, and generally help build the systems necessary for GRuB to support community food solutions. This is an exciting opportunity to support GRuB as we begin our new 5 year Strategic Plan.

Major responsibilities include:

Outreach and meeting coordination in food insecure neighborhoods.

Program and systems development

Co-coordinating and expanding volunteer opportunities as an entry point to bring more community members into the food justice movement.

Coordinate hands-on sustainable agriculture/garden work

Coordinate building raised-bed (and other) vegetable gardens for low-income families

Supporting marketing & fundraising efforts to meet the increased budget capacity needs for this project

Qualifications for VISTA positions:

  • 18 years old or older, high school equivalency*
  • Mature, outgoing, comfortable working in a group
  • Strong experience & rapport with youth
  • Strong communication, teaching, & facilitation skills
  • Positive attitude, works well with others
  • Gardening/farming experience preferred
  • Computer literate (MS Office Suite)
  • Spanish or Vietnamese language proficiency a plus
