Virginia: The West End Farmers Market seeks two Interns

The West End Farmers Market, located in Alexandria, Va, is looking for two interns: Farmers Market Assistants, for the market season, July through November.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

AVAILABILITY: Assistant should be willing to commit to the full duration of the market season, July through November 20.  Assistants will work the market every other Sunday from 8:30am to 1:30pm and/or work during the week setting up for the weekend.


Extroverted personality a must.  Outgoing, enthusiastic, dedicated and dependable.  They should have an interest in working with people, be gently informative, and open to conversation, dialogue and other points of view.  An interest and knowledge of local foods, organic foods, and how farmers markets build community is useful, but not absolutely necessary.  A set of articles will be provided and the interns will be expected to read them and be informed.

  • Enjoy interacting with the public and the ability to talk with not at a wide range of people.
  • Delight in meeting new people and fostering connections with the community

Market Assistant 1:

This person will work to create connections with surrounding condominiums, apartment complexes and developments.  They will seek to establish a working relationship with the building managers in order to receive permission to do one or more of the following:

  • Place posters in public areas of the building
  • Place ads in their newsletters
  • Provide information about what is happening at the market to their newsletters or e-mail listserves.

This person will dedicate another twenty hours during the course of the summer to developing the market’s ability to handle Snap/EBT.  This person will research necessary paperwork, government agencies to contact, fees involved.  In addition this person will research at other markets and develop a strategy for using SNAP/EBT at the market (in what manner will the market reimburse the vendor for example.)

Market Assistant 2: 

This person will assist the farmers market managers in several marketing initiatives at the market: Canning Initiative; Rainy Day Raffle; Contests and Giveaways; Sampling of various vendors foods; children’s giveaways.

This will involve planning during the week for the next week’s market by:  setting up necessary paperwork, posters, labels; providing information for the website and facebook.  At the market this will involve, on different days, giving away either coupons, recipe booklets, samples of foods, or holding the rainy day raffle if it is raining.   This internship also entails informing customers as they enter the market of the various things going on at the market that day, (cooking demonstrations, face-painting, etc.).
