Virginia: The West End Farmers Market seeks two Interns

The West End Farmers Market, located in Alexandria, Va, is looking for two interns: Farmers Market Assistants, for the market season, July through November.

REPORTS TO: Executive Director

AVAILABILITY: Assistant should be willing to commit to the full duration of the market season, July through November 20.  Assistants will work the market every other Sunday from 8:30am to 1:30pm and/or work during the week setting up for the weekend.


Extroverted personality a must.  Outgoing, enthusiastic, dedicated and dependable.  They should have an interest in working with people, be gently informative, and open to conversation, dialogue and other points of view.  An interest and knowledge of local foods, organic foods, and how farmers markets build community is useful, but not absolutely necessary.  A set of articles will be provided and the interns will be expected to read them and be informed.    Continue reading

Two summer internships are available with the Central Minnesota Vegetable Growers Association (CMVGA) to provide support for the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) and Market Bucks program at the Minneapolis Farmers Market (Lyndale Avenue location).   The EBT program allows individuals to utilize their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, formerly known as food stamps, at the market to purchase eligible items including fresh fruits and vegetables.  The Market Bucks program is a complementary initiative to provide matching funds for EBT customers in order to increase their purchasing power. The Regional Environmental Council, Inc. (REC), a grassroots, nonprofit, environmental justice organization with a 40-year history of working for environmental sustainability and social justice, is seeking a motivated and skilled individual to coordinate the Farmers Market Project of the REC’s Food Justice Program. This requires planning and managing 2 weekly markets that will run June through October in 2 of Worcester’s most food insecure communities. The Main South Farmers Market has run successfully for 3 seasons—a 1-month pilot in 2008 and a full 22 week season in 2009 and 2010. In 2010 REC also launched a second market location in collaboration with the Edward M Kennedy Health Center at Great Brook Valley. The GBV market will run biweekly in 2011 with the addition of a mobile market (selling produce from a vehicle) on market days. The Coordinator will be responsible for managing all aspects of planning and implementing successful farmers’ markets, including developing and implementing an outreach and marketing plan for both markets and for designing educational materials and planning and conducting educational workshops and other outreach efforts in order to build a customer base for the markets in food insecure communities. Work hours for the position will include regular weekend and some evening commitments. This position reports directly to the REC Food Justice Program Director. A successful candidate must be available to work on site at the markets every Saturday. Continue reading

Massachusetts: Waltham Fields Community Farm seeks Outreach Market Intern

Dates & Hours:  Tuesdays, July 19th through October 11th, 3pm – 7:30pm with some flexible hours in June and October for planning, promotion and preparing a summary report; this is a part-time position.  Compensation:  $800, plus some vegetables from the farm.

Outreach Market Description: Waltham Fields Community Farm’s Outreach Market is a once-a-week, subsidized produce market, operating on Tuesday afternoons, mid July through mid October.  The Market is targeted to all low-income residents in Waltham, as well as the clientele of several local, social service agencies.  At the Market, customers can fill a paper grocery bag with our organically-grown vegetables for just $5 per bag, or by redeeming a voucher which entitles them to a free bag of produce.  We administer the vouchers through the social service agencies.  With these agency partnerships, we continue to increase the number of voucher booklets distributed each year.  Continue reading
