Zenger Farm seeks Apprentices/Youth Education Intern

Location: Portland, Oregon

With busy Foster Road whizzing by just outside the Zenger Farm gate, first-time visitors may be surprised to find 10 acres of protected wetland and a 6-acre farm nestled just out of sight. The farm includes 2.5 acres of annual and perennial crops, a flock of laying hens rotating in their mobile coop through the fields, seasonal turkeys hunting and pecking for bugs in the orchard, and active honey bees on the hunt for flowers. Zenger Farm is currently hiring Spring/Summer/Fall Apprentices and a Youth Education Intern.

The farm was operated by the Zenger family as a dairy for almost a century (for more information, go to About the Farm ).  In 1995 Urban Bounty Farm began growing vegetables on the land and educating local kids about food and farming.  In 1999, Friends of Zenger Farm was established, and the non-profit worked in partnerships with Urban Bounty Farm and later 47th Avenue Farm to grow sustainable local produce and to teach youth and adults about healthy food and healthy farms. Educational Opportunities: Organic Plant Propagation, Nursery Work, Greenhouse Production, Vegetable, Flower and Herb Market Gardening, Berry and Grape Production, Orcharding, Direct Marketing, Composting, Seed Production, Heritage Plant Exploration and Propagation, Homesteading Skills, Small Equipment Management, Ornamental Management, Community Living, Vegetarian and Vegan Food Preparation (and consumption!), Food Preserving Skills such as drying, juicing, fermentation, baking, canning, freezing.

We live and grow on a gorgeous 11 acres on the San Juan Ridge, between the Middle and South Forks of the Yuba River at 2500′ in the northern Sierra Nevada, 30 minutes from Nevada City and Grass Valley. Our farm is a mixture of productive fields, orchards, pines, oaks, madrone, cedar and fir forest, with a seasonal creek and four distinct seasons. Greenview Farm seeks Two Apprentices

Location: South Kingston, Rhode Island

Greenview Farm is a busy 18-acre certified organic farm. We grow a wide variety of produce, herbs, and cut flowers. We market through a 160-member CSA, farmer’s markets, spring plant sale and local restaurants.

We hire two apprentices and hourly workers for the season, mid-April through October (students wanting to work hourly are hired during summer break). Workers take part in all aspects of the farm’s operation: greenhouse, field preparation, seeding/transplanting, cultivation, harvest, post-harvest and marketing. Continue reading

NCSU Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ Small Farm Unit seeks 2010 Apprentices

Location: Goldsboro, North Carolina

Apprentices come to the Center for Environmental Farming Systems’ Small Farm Unit (SFU) to learn the basics of running a small farm in eastern North Carolina in a practical, hands-on manner by working with the farm manager, extension personnel and university researchers on a daily basis. Apprentices will participate fully in the production and marketing activities of the SFU as learners and partners, and may observe and participate in education and research/demonstration activities as occasions permit. Apprentices are expected to develop the expertise to take charge of specific enterprises or aspects of the small farm unit.

The SFU is a 30-acre unit of the 2,000-acre Cherry Research Farm in Goldsboro, in Wayne County, eastern North Carolina. The apprenticeship is designed to be a practical, experience-based, hands-on learning adventure. Apprentices work with other learners and are guided by CEFS staff with experience in production, marketing, research and social context. Weavers Way is looking for Two 2010 Apprentices

Location: Northwest Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We are accepting applications through January 19th, 2010.

Weavers Way is currently seeking two apprentices to work on our farming projects in Northwest Philadelphia.  The farm sites consist of a two acre market farm, and a three acre CSA.  The farms are run through Weavers Way Coop, a 3,600 member, community-owned market with locations in Mt Airy, West Oak Lane and Chestnut Hill.  Apprentices will be expected to work 40-55 hours per week, depending on the time of the season, which runs March 29th to mid-November.  Each apprentice will focus their time at one of the two sites.  We offer a $100 weekly stipend, produce from the farm, coop membership, and housing with a local family if needed.  Both positions offer experience with small scale, diversified organic vegetable production and the opportunity to develop skills in greenhouse production, season extension, pest management, planting, weeding, harvesting, marketing, and volunteer management.
