Minneapolis: Cherry Tree House Mushrooms seeks Intern

23 Apr

Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota

Cherry Tree House Mushrooms, our small urban farm, provides for our needs as much as possible, while providing a surplus to share and profit from. Our practices are organic and as sustainable as we can manage – thrifty and with thought to the post-peak oil long term.

My main focus is on mushroom cultivation, mostly shiitake on oak logs, but I have started experimenting with oyster, nameko, and stropharia varieties. This summer I hope to sell between 50 and 100 lbs. to a restaurant or grocery, and next year may be twice that. I also sell logs and inoculated logs to individuals growing their own mushrooms. Finally, earlier this spring I gave workshops in mushroom cultivation, and plan to do the same in coming years.

In addition to mushroom cultivation, we have several projects or practices for self-sufficiency or for a small profit. At this point we have a small laying flock of chickens that we keep for eggs – and an ever-growing annual garden. This spring we are starting a forest garden of fruit and nut shrubs and trees, and in the next year we plan to add meat rabbits and honey bees to the mix. Continue reading
