Connecticut: Urban Oaks Organic Farm seeks Educator

Urban Oaks Organic Farm is a 3+ acre non-profit inner city farm with six renovated greenhouses. We operate year round, growing award winning certified organic produce primarily greens, herbs, heirloom tomatoes, and specialty crops. Our produce (supplemented with other local organic farms’ products) is sold wholesale to some of the best restaurants and specialty stores in CT and retail, directly to the public, in both our onsite farmstand and in our winter and summer CSA shares.

Urban Oaks Farm is accepting applications for a part-time Farm Based Educator currently funded for one afternoon per week on Thursdays to work with 4th and 5th graders; potential for expansion to other days and a possible summer program. The focus will be seasonal growing and vermiculture using texts, workbooks and the farm’s resources.

The position is a contract, non-staff position that begins in early February through mid May 2011. Compensation is $16/hour which includes 5 hours on Thursday afternoons and 2 hours paid preparation time weekly with an additional 20 hours of paid prep time upon hire through March.

Qualifications: BS/BA in environmental education, agriculture, natural science or related field is preferred(may substitute associate degree with relevant experience) along with prior experience on a working farm/nature center. Previous work with school age children as well as a positive, outgoing approach are strongly preferred. Able to work collaboratively with other farm staff and direct, motivate, and inspire inner city students and their parents. Basic computer skills necessary; experience with a Flip camera and Movie Maker a plus.
