NYC: Farm City seeks Intern

21 May

Farm City is seeking an intern to help plan and produce a series of events from 9/12-9/25/10 that chart an evocative and engaging journey through the sites, sounds, tastes and ideas of the urban agriculture movement rapidly evolving in cities around the US, focusing on these development in NYC.

Farm City explores the economic and environmental connections between two seemingly incompatible uses of the land: urban and agrarian. Artists and activists have sought to radically redefine urbanites’ future relationship with food, imagining a myriad of new ways to farm the city. Farm City will present four main events which are as follows:

(1) Farm City Fair:     Displaying, selling and cooking foods grown and produced in Brooklyn!  Sunday September 12, 2010; (2) Farm City Tour:    A guided & annotated journey to some of Brooklyn’s urban farms.  Saturday and Sunday September 18 and 19, 2010; (3) Farm City Films:   Moviehouse, Saturday, September 12 and FIAF Florence Gould Hall, Tueday, September 14, 2010 (4) Farm City Forum: Dialogue on Culture and Agriculture:  September 25, 2010.

Farm City needs sustained assistance primarily in the month of June 2010 to finalize programming decisions and solidify all plans.  The intern would help coordinate outreach to farmers, processors, chefs, food activists and artists.  Work would slow in July, permitting the intern to take a vacation during this period.  Then, starting August 15-September 25, 2010, we would need the intern to assist in the production and logistics of the upcoming and occurring events.  We can accommodate the intern if s/he must return to school during the final production period.  However, students in NYC area schools may find it easier to handle work during this last period.

Vista workers seeking a placement are welcome to apply.  Good writing, computer, social networking and communication skills are a must with a strong desire to make an impact in the urban food justice movement.  The intern would be paid a stipend weekly commensurate with experience.  Graduate students in environmental studies, food, farming, planning and policy are preferred.  However, persons with 4 year college degrees and at least one year of post-collegiate work experience in an area of endeavor related to Farm City would be favorably reviewed.  Decisions will be made on a fast track basis with close attention paid to the intern’s availability by June 1, 2010.  If the intern proves to be a good fit for the organization, other work in related urban farming projects may be available during this time period and thereafter.  Please send a resume and one-page cover letter for review.  No telephone calls please.
